Oil & Fuel Diesel fuel.

My ex-girlfriends dad sells oils and fuel for a living. I called him a few weeks ago and had some questions on motor oil for a Saturn I have. While talking to him I asked him what the difference was between Home Heating Oil and #2 diesel? His answer was from his company, nothing. He said it comes out of the same tank, same truck, same nozzle. They do not sell enough HHO to justify keeping a separate tank and such. He said many of his farmer customers have large 5,000 gallon tanks in the farm lot that not only supply the tractors but also supply the home and shop heat. I am sure this is a tax deduction situation but that is another topic. I also asked him about additives. I have been using Howse or Power Serve in the white bottle. I add it to my storage tank in the proper ratio when fuel is delivered. He said they put PS in every drop of fuel they deliver. Its mixed when bought so no choice in the matter for customer.

Now as far as diesel goes at retail outlets around here its #2 but in the winter they do placard the pump as being winter blend. When running winter blend I do notice some performance difference in my 2 diesel trucks. Never ran winter blend in my tractor. I have a 300 gallon tank at home and its always filled in the spring so I am always running a summer #2 off road fuel.

Um, I wouldn't swear to it but I believe that is illegal unless the customer is informed and given a choice beforehand.

The "winter blend" moniker is local jargon, and is nothing more than straight #2 diesel cut with 10% - 20% #1 diesel to help prevent gelling at extreme low temperature. The combining of the two lowers the calorific value, or BTU's of the fuel

Can you please be more specific? If this is a good thing that has a paper trail, it could help us out a whole lot. Three of our class vessels each have four EMD-710G's and each vessels use averages approximately 4,500 gallons of ULSD/day, 365 days/yr. Currently we are getting only about 35,000 hrs. on a set of injectors (no waxy build-up here) so this additive may help?

I think a dealer can put what ever he or she wants in fuel as long as its not hidden. Take Shell gas. It is advertised they put the V-Power boost/cleaner in every drop of gas that they sell and it says on the pump its fortified with V-Power. Same thing with Marathon gas. It states it fortified with STP boost/cleaner.

So them adding Power Serve in the fuel they sell is legal. They do not hide the fact. If you do not want the PS you simply buy from another dealer. I will say they are the largest fuel/oil distributor in a 75 mile radius around Indianapolis, the 13 largest city in the US. So they sell lots of fuel. I know Indianapolis? Look it up. Its the 13 largest. Bigger than many other cities like Miami, Cincinnati, St. Louis, ect. I could not believe it either.

I am sure you are right about the winter blend. We have #2 diesel here and at times I see #1 diesel but not often. I hear a lot of guys mixing Kero with the diesel in the winter to thin it out a bit. I have never done that. We have had temps as low as -30 this winter and my fuel with the pre-mixed PS and the added gallon of Howse I put in my 300 gallon tank when its delivered has never given me on days trouble. By the way I have B5 in there now but have run as much as B20 when it was cost effective. My farmer buddy says he can smell the difference but I can not.

I try to buy at least a years supply of fuel, timing the market (the best I can) for the lowest price. I treat the diesel fuel with a stabilizer from one of my customers that manufacturers "Snake Oil" for the phone company, railroad, military, cargo ships, hospital standby generator fuel storage etc.... The company is called ILFC ILFC - International Lubrication and Fuel Consultants, Inc. Website which is short for "International Lubrication and Fuel Consultants. They also test fuel quality and lubricants for lubricity and wear metal analysis. They gave me some "stuff" ILFC - ILFC 1035 COMBUSTION CATALYST to treat my tractor fuel. Their chief chemist said "diesel fuel stored and treated properly on an annual basis will last almost indefinitely." I will probably use it up before that though.

They also provide laboratory services covering all aspects of fuel, lubricant and wear metal analysis. I maintain most of their analytical instrumentation, anyone with fuel issues on a grand scale might consider contacting them.

Doing a VP44 on my 01 now and in the reasearch I found this

"Never add transmission fluid to the electronic controled fuel pumps. The transmission fluid has friction modifiers in it that can destroy the close tolerance parts of the vp44."

Not sure how reliable that is but it makes sense. I think I will be swithing to
2cycle oil for a diesel additive.

Ummm, what's wrong with using an additive that's actually formulated for diesel fuel ? If you're trying to save money, I don't think you'll do it buying two-stroke oil/
