Oil & Fuel Diesel in engine oil 385 Yangdong

The hydraulic fluid is down a bit but that might be accounted for by the FEL being all the way up.
The fuel tank was near empty but I'm not sure how much was in it.
There is a smell of diesel in the drain oil but not a "strong" smell.
I may have to refill and watch. If I pull of the Hydraulic pump will a blown seal be obvious?

I drained and refilled the engine oil. Now after about 5hr work the oil may be slightly above the full line, it was at the full line when I filled it. the seal in the hydro pump could be just old and slow leaking? I'm thinking Tommy was correct, that it was hydraulic oil in the engine.
When I filled the engine it took 5 1/2 quarts so it was almost a quart over when I drained it.

There are only two ways to determine if the engine oil is contaminated with hydraulic oil at this point:
1) Oil analysis.
2) Change the pump and/or seal and see if the oil level rises again (and if it is the case, then you will have two additional oil changes to do).

A simple analysis could have saved all that extra time and expense. Oh well....

Bob, I checked the cost here for and analysis. It was $100, $200 if they checked for hydraulic fluid. I think I'll get a # off the hydro pump and get a seal. Richard

That's hard to believe Richard. The highest I've seen for viscosity comparisons is $32.00 US. I pay $26.00 for mine and that even includes TBN, and that's with Stavely Services, a world wide highly competent and certified laboratory, and they email the results immediately, followed by snail-mail.

Either PM me or post here who you got that analysis quote from please.

To quote you in an earlier post: "I found the # of a Lab in Gardnerville,Nevada I think I'll call them tomorrow. I may not have a test done at this time but its good to have a lab that close. The price you mentioned is way under what I expected for an analysis."
That's OK Richard, you can do what you wish, I was only trying to save you some time and money.

When I was an Engineman in the Coast Guard we used this Oil Viscosity Testing Comparator - Visgage Portable Oil Viscosity Tester to do field tests for fuel dilution. You simply sucked up a sample and then let it cool to room temp. You then tilted the comparator and watched the ball in the upper tube that was filled with a calibration oil. When the ball reached the end of the calibration tube you then looked at where the ball was in the sample and the supplied tables told you what your dilution factor was. Simple We also used oil analysis for other contaminates.

Back in '59 I ran the oil analysis lab for the 13th District, were you around then? We used those comparators back then too.
