Diesel knock and overall sound

Injection pumps can be very noisy. When I was a kid my dad and I pulled the pump off of our mid 1950's D8 and had it tested at a local Cat dealer. They hooked it up to the rack and man it was loud. Rattle rattle rattle rattle.......

Those old beasts could be temperamental. I spent a lot of time withe WD 9's never saw two the same.
I was not talking about compression being increased. I was talking about Injection pressure's from the pump.
They have been increased that is why they are able to lower compression pressure.
Sorry I didn't explain it the way I should have.

While growing up, I was around, and operated two of the International diesels - a TD-9 dozer and a Galion road grader. If we left that TD-9 out in the woods for a cold night or two, we had to heat it for half a day to get it going again!

How did you heat it? We had an old cat DW21 that we left the Pup engine run at night to keep the engine warmed up. Work well most of the time if it didn't run out of gas.

We heated the TD-9 with a generator, kerosene construction heater, and a tarp. I wasn't there at the time, but I heard that Dad actually built a wood fire under it once.

A friend has an airport fire truck.
It has the sweetest engine, about 650 hp 2 (two) stroke diesel engine. Now that is pure power. That beast could win a drag race! but forget fuel economy, never mind MPG's it is GPM's.
When he drove it home from auction he was passing cars on the highway with no effort.
Only problem was he was 11 ft wide so he needed to be careful.
This was an airport crash truck, 4 X 4, 10 yrs old with mere mileage and hours on it. Simply 'outdated' by gov't standards. Gov't paid 1 mil and sold off for peanuts. Taxpayer's money at work!
Maybe they replaced as it did not meet the new tier pollution levels.

I was the ranch mechanic on a cattle and hay ranch in northern Nevada back in the '70s. In the winter, in order to get the equipment started, we would park the best starting tractor in the shop at night, an Oliver 4wd turbo diesel. In the morning I would use it to pull start the other tractors and one of our Cats, I think it was a D3. Never knew a Cat could be pull started until then. Quite a racket with all of those old diesels trying to wake up in the morning. I had fun getting to know every one of them.

Doesn't explain the instances where ether is preferred over the wall receptacle 15ft from the machine . If there is no power . Small generators are so cheap now days there is no excuse for not having 120V any place it's required.
