Diesel - running rough / good RPM, but no power

Hello,

I've got an Iseki TS2200 Diesel tractor (19 horse) and it's been running just fine, though it does use a bit of oil. It starts up fine, smokes a bit at startup, and then runs smoothly. About 2 months ago it smoked longer than usual and ran a little rough for about 5 minutes, then ran fine.

A couple of weeks later it ran rough and smoked for about 10 minutes. After each use it took longer and longer to smooth out and now it won't smooth out at all. It's like it's idling rough even when I'm at full throttle.

I'm getting full RPM's, but no power. When I engage my bush hog it bogs down like it's in tall weeds. I drained the fuel tank, bled the fuel bowl, checked the air filter, put some cetane additive in there, but no good. It starts right up, but runs rough, smokes, and no power. I pulled the air intake hose off at the engine and there's a fuel mist coming out of the engine in time with the "rough" idling.

Is it possible that the injectors have opened up and are pushing too much fuel? Any suggestions on what I can try?

PS - I don't know if it's related, but when I do idle down it has started popping every 20-30 seconds. Not loud like a backfire, but noticeable.

First, welcome aboard. You'll find a wealth of knowledge here.

Second, Iit sound more like an intake valve problem to me. Fuel should not be in the intake manifold--it's injected into the cylinder after the intake valve has be closed a long time. The fact that something is 'misting' out the intake is not good news.

Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in and prove me wrong, but that would be my guess--bad intake valve.

I would recommend a compression test, and I too think it may be a valve.. Good luck with it.

Is it bad news because intake valves are hard to replace or because they're expensive (or both?)

sounds like a valve to me as well if fuel is coming out the intake. Its bad because you have to pull the head off the motor to repair. Can be fairly expensive and time comsuming. I would also suggest a compression test before digging into the motor. How many hours on the tractor, could it be time for rings/bearings as well?

I have read other posts referring to fuel injection timing. Any chance something is wrong there?

Yes, if the injector timing has changed a few degrees, or even the camshaft timing a few degrees, the engine can still run but will be poorly. I would check the timing and do a compression test. As the others have said too, a valve can be sticking or bent and give the same symptoms.
