Me, I prefer the smell of fresh hightest to stale. Stale stuff I've been able to smell 50' away if it's been spilled. Nasty stuff. The best is two-stroke smoke. Reminds me of racing and having a blast. Oh, and the smell of a fresh-mowed lawn done by a 2-stroke LawnBoy is heaven on earth.
As far as diesels smoking when they're cold, that's normal. It's usually the white of unburnt fuel. If you're worried though, check your air filter. A restrictive filter will cause more smoking as well, warm OR cold.
