Diesel Storage and Grades

I was wondering if anyone had any links where you can buy plastic storage barrels online. I figure it's got to be easier to buy larger quantities of diesel than doing the 5 gal at a time thing. Also, I understand that Kerosene (coal oil as my parents and grandparents called it) is K1 is home heating oil K2 and is it the same a regular diesel. I never had to deal with diesel until my recent purchase of my Kubota BX22.

I went to the website posted by Ozarker... $30-$50 for a reconditioned drum seems high to me. I work in a chemical plant and have access to free plastic drums. From time to time they dispose of drums which contained Simple Green, another cleaner made locally called HDIC and porta-potty odorizer that we nicknamed "bubblegum" because of it's smell. These drums are suitable for rinsing out and re-using without worrying about harmful chemical residue or cross contamination. I have a couple at home that I use for transporting water.

Do you know anyone who works in a plant or other industrial type job that might have access to plastic drums? If so maybe you could find someone to get one for you for free. Perhaps you could check with the portable toilet rental places in your area and see if they use/dispose 55 gallon drums.

Just a thought for saving a few $$$.

I picked up 2 blue drums with the 2-2" holes in the top for storing diesel. Got some PVC fittings from HD and a brass valve and now have a nice set-up for filling my 3 diesel engines from this barrel. I got my barrels from a transportation company near a Coca-Cola plant. Rinsed out several times with hot water, then once with 2gal of diesel, and good to go.

If you're near a marina that does boat services, check there for the blue plastic 55 gal drums. They're nice because they have the 2 size threaded bungs. Marinas usually have them laying around from the non-toxic freshwater RV type anti-freeze for cruisers and houseboat winterizations. Just rinse 'em out, and you're set. Sometime you can pick them up for $5-$10 to the boat mechanics for lunch. Here in Pittsburgh I go to a local marina and get all I want for free, they just throw them out or wait for the junkman to come around. I picked up 10 a few weeks ago for myself and some friends for rainwater collection, and there was still a dozen or more left.

I just was at my local deisel truck parts store (2 nearby) and was buying a fuel filter. I just asked if they had any 55 gal drums for sale, etc.. Got 3 for free. They get motor oil in them to sell/change and can't get ride of them. brand new too. could put diesel right in them without rinsing.

I think the metal barrel is the way to go if you are planning on storing them in anything connected to your house.

Look around for a place that sells off-road diesel--you'll save roughly $.45 per gallon in taxes.

They probably are a higher priced than picking up used ones that held non-food items. All those reconditioned one are food grade. But I think that is all you will find on the web. There is no profit in selling used RV chemical barrels for $10 and shipping them.

Any petroleum company will sell you a new steel 55 gal. drum for about $20. You can get a rotary petroleum pump from Harbor freight for $29.95, or mount it horizontally, higher than the tractor, and install a 1" faucet and gravity fill. Not sure if I understand the rest of your question, but kerosene and diesel are two different things.

How long do you think 55 gallons of diesel will last you for your BX22...?

Give or take a few hours... I'll guesstimate 138 hrs... /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

So maybe about a year and a half from now you"ll need another fuel drop...
