hands down a diesel will out work a Gas engine with less mantenence
Locomotives run 100's of 1000' of hours with minimal maintenece .
Different engine but it is the same idea
Proper maimtenence that is the key.

Yep, loco engines are more like ship engines. Very slow speed.

Put a turbo on comparable size gasser in your truck and then try talk to about the diesel outworking it. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Well, maybe true, but what about fuel economy... I'd factor that in there too...Dont forget longevity of that gasburner turning 5-6000RPM to get that power... Diesel wins..

I'll talk about it all day long. How many gas powered semis out there? Farm tractors (not antiques, modern working tractors)? Earth moving equipment of any sort? How about CUT's? Not many gassers available, are there (not even Kioti).

My 175 hp Cummins pickup will outwork, using less fuel, a 300 hp gas pickup any day of the week. Period, no contest.

Turbo gas motors are for playing, not working.

probably better miles per gallon of refined fuel, but how about crude oil?

From here;

( a gallon of low-sulfur diesel fuel requires 25 percent more oil than a gallon of low-sulfur reformulated gasoline )

Just remember, most diesel locomotives use the diesel engine for running huge generators or alternators that power electric motors on the bogies. The diesel engine is not hooked directly to the wheels.

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), the authors of the sited article, have been debunked several times for using faulty data and questionable conclusions while carrying a left wing political agenda. They are as believable as Consumer's Union in my opinion.

Just another Hate America First organization. Sorry.

Diesel is less refined version of crude oil than gasoline is. Which means, yes, more crude is in a gallon of diesel than a gallon of gas. What you failed to point out is that there is less energy investment in refining that oil to diesel than refining to gasoline. Also diesel can be extracted more easily than gasoline from the dirty crudes. Gasoline is best obtained from the "light sweet crude" (read middle eastern) oils.

However, the core of this article is on emissions. The EPA measures emissions per gallon of fuel used. If a diesel powered vehicle uses 20% less fuel to go 1 mile than a gas powered vehicle, but produces 10% more pollutants per gallon, there is still a net DECREASE in pollutants of 10% in the real (non-government) world.

The EPA laws are mostly governmental spin to stay in bed with the oil companies. They have very little to do with pollution.

Just my observations.

Gas earth moving equipment? Sure.. Hyster was, at least up until recently powering some asphalt rollers with gas truck engines... Have 2 setting out in the yard right now.

Modern gas tractors?... At least 1 model of Cub Cadet comes to mind. Saw on on a lot a year or so ago.. looked to be in the 25-30 hp range.. I was way surprised to see sparkplug wires on a new tractor... go figure..

While I will agree that ANY organization can be debunked by anyone, I fail to see the bias in this article.

I can tell that diesel is much cheaper to produce because (at least in my area) its 50 cents higher per gallon than gas. Before I hear the high heating demand argument, it's the same in the summer too.

I believe the EPA, the rest of the hierarchy, & John Q don't give a darn about emissions.

I am sure that the oil companies want us to get better mileage so they can sell less fuel. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
