Diff Lock Doesn\'t

Been using my old 1710 to move snow and using the dif lock to get un-stuck. Was harder and harder to engage and now seems to not be there at all. I was using in both forward and reverse - it that OK or is it only for forward?

How hard to fix it? Complete tranny teardown?

Had a similar problem with my old 1720. I think it was caused by years of misuse - stepping on it while at least one wheel was spinning rather fast. When I passed the tractor on, only would engage when stepped on firmly and all the way to the floor. Heard though it could be simply a bent yoke on the engagement mechanism which could be fixed by removing only the top of the tranny. Seems like I once looked at the repair manual and confirmed this.
