The above quote is from another post about Walmart selling price of Rotella Synthetic. This brings about the question... What is Synthetic oil and how does one brand differ from another. How does synthetic differ from other oils? Many people tout the benefits of one brand over another, but I haven't ever seen any reason beyond personal choice. Please give your reason to believe that you recommended choice of oil is better. How can a Dino product be changed and "legally" be called something else???? Thanks

$$$ and hype. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If synthetic was indeed superior, there would not be any dino oil.
If synthetic were indeed superior, it would be standard equipment in ALL engines from the factory.
If synthetic were indeed superior, everyone would use Slick50.

My .02.
I use dino oil, always have in every engine, and never had any oil-related problems.
Regular changing of the oil is the main key to longevity.

My take on oil??? It all comes from the same place......The ground. Each manufacturer just adds their own "special sauce" Now synthetic I am not sure about. A friend of mine pays something like 5 dollars a quart for Honda motor oil to put in his Honda Foreman. I pay $1.75 a quart for Castrol GTX for my Arctic Cat 400, and have never had a problem. No clutch slipping, No shift problems, No nothing. Oil is oil in my book. Now one thing I will not do is interchange brands. I pick a brand and that is all I use. In my case, Castrrol GTX goes in my truck, my wife's car, my ATV and anything else I have.

Oil.......I am to cheap to buy the synthetic stuff. But I agree that there is alot of very good advertising that makes people think they need it. I know quite a few people that spend alot of money on the synthetics and they will swear it is better. They never have any engine problems........I on the other hand use Kendall motor oil with wix filters and save alot of money and never have engine problems. When I buy a car I run it into the ground. 79 Chev Caprice 145K, 86 Chev Cavalier 212k, 91 Ford Tempo 190k....all past cars I have had. Currently I am working on killing a 97 Taurus 134K and a 97 F250 84K. The debate continues...... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Ah, what does the topic header say... "the never ending discussion..." or something like that! For what it's worth, I was able to score a couple cases of Castrol GTX 5W-30 for about .88 a quart, thanks to a Pepboy's rebate deal- at that price, I am happy running it thru my motor vehicles. My tractor, on the other hand, doesn't get the constant use over the winter that means frequent oil changes, so a much more costly, but easy to turn over when cold, synthetic makes sense to me.

Well the good old oil debate. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

There are many groups of oils group 1, (Solvent refined), 2 (Hydro processed), 3 (Hydrocracked (VHVI)), 4 (PAO) & 5 (jet engine oil). There max life hours get better as you go up each stage.

Plus there is the new PC-9 spec the diesel oils much adhere to. Again each stage has different additives etc.

Some people think if it was better then dino it would not be around. Well my friend, it comes down to money and you get what you pay for. For example, my parents own a 2004 Ford Explorer and my wife has a 2002 Mercedes Benz SUV. You get what you pay for. The Ford is nice but my wife’s is like 10X better (ride, reliability, functionally etc). The Ford sells like crazy due to the price ($35K) and my wife’s is like $55K.

Plus I do not think you will get Wal-Mart people paying $4.00 per qt for oil. Not knocking Wal-mart but look at the majority of there cliental.

It is a factory fluid in certain cars (corvettes, my wife’s ML-420 (along with all MB cars) etc. These engines require it since dino will not “do the job”.

Plus look at the quick lube places. They do not want synthetics since it will hurt their business (for short drains) and they promote the moronic 3,000 mile drains which are nothing short of a money maker, period!

Lastly, synthetic is far superior then dino but again it comes down to $$$ from YOU the buyer to the manufacture selling oil.

Some people never have problem with there cars using dino oil but look at there drains. I use synthetic and do the once per year in my Lexus, wife’s ML420, Kubota etc and that in itself is money well spent. The oil perform better after these hours/miles then dino with 1/3 the usage.

I just know what I have used etc. The oil test come back better using synthetic in all tests. Better in all areas but, again, I could beat a dead horse with some people. So, use corn oil for all a care. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

gsxr1100,

My question is not related.......your signature picture is one I have not seen yet. I like it. When I was younger...not that long ago....me and the friends would use those radar check points for fun. The ones we always screwed with would only go to "99" and then start to blink. Had so much fun!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The picture is not "100% real". Having my "old man" as a MA State Cop did have some advantages now and then though:)

I never thought one could get a $550 speeding ticket! Now my GSXR just sits in the garage while I take the BX (doing maybe 5 MPH) /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

MB has had SEVERAL engine problems with people not using synthetic oils. They state in there manuals to not use dino oil. Weird yes, but I think MB is steeping up to the plate with oils.
