Differential issue on 2210??

I was doing some clearing yesterday and went to push over a dead stump with my box blade. I lost traction in reverse, but I noticed both wheels spinning. Dumb question, but does this indicate that the differential was locked? I pulled up on the diff lock but both wheels still spun in reverse. The diff lock pedal seems sluggish and doesn't "pop" back up if I press down on it. I only stepped on it once when I was going forward and one wheel spun. Right after doing so, I reached down and pulled the lever up as high as it would go. I have used the tractor several times since and never noticed any difficulty turning or other signs of distress...it just surprised me to see both wheels spinning in reverse, not having stepped on the diff lock.

If the pull or traction is equal on both wheels they would both spin. How often that might happen I have no idea.

Pressing the pedal forces a pin down a sloping ramp, that moves the ramp sideways to engage the differential lock. But lifting the lever only allows the differential to unlock, it doesn't force it unlocked.

You could test if it is unlocked by pushing down one brake while moving on slippery ground.

Previous owner of my first YM186D used it mostly for clearing snow and he must have been on the diff lock pedal constantly. He wore a groove in the ramp that had to be built back up by welding.

Same with a few of the Yanmar YMs I've messed with (toyed with). Sure, the diff-lock is engaged, when you lift your foot up, it's doesn't change unless you slow the engine a little or as CA said, you tap the brakes or turn the wheel right/left or just wait for it to slip back to normal operation.

I tend to notice this a whole bunch when snow plowing in reverse as the straight blade is on the 3pt and I plow in reverse. The ice patches need the diff-lock engaged to stop the wheel spin. Oddly, if I forget to slow the engine and turn the wheels, the diff-lock seems to remain. Then aligning the tractor to the next sweep of snow, it's as if the steering can be turned left or right, but the tractor will still go forwards. LOL

Using the disc harrow, I run into this funny trouble going forwards at times. Just lift the foot, slow the rpms and then lift the disc harrow and swing the tractor 180 for the return path.

Some times, when the tractor is moving, getting the diff-lock to engage is strange too. Sort of needing it to be just at the right sync and then the pedal will go to the floor.

For the most part, it is a sluggish function of the tractor, but I've learned how to deal with it and plan ahead when needing to use the diff-lock. If you always need it in a hurray, don't depend on it that way.

The part in my photo above is part # 85 in this Hoye diagram. Pressing the pedal slides that shifter fork along the rod it is installed on. Pin # 42 is what wore the groove in the fork's ramp.

A clue for anyone else puzzled by the Hoye diagram: Find the foot pedal and follow it into the transmission beyond the spring.
