On my old tractors.. some ( most ) don't even have a way to lock the pedals.. they are always free floating.. etc..

In those cases some steering brakes will work too... been there, done that..

I've found in those slippery situations work excellent. The guys who push snow do that all the time. Problem is, you can't have the rear differential locked because the steering brakes won't work that way. So I find myself operating without the differential lock most of the time so I can use the steering brakes effectively. Then engage it when I need it.

Some (many? ) old tractors have no diffy lock.. thus if you have a wheel slipping.. the opposite brake pedal is your 'limited slip' soloution..

Ford N for instance.. have no diffy lock.. etc.

On my old Farmall C, crank the steering wheel left or right, hit the approiate brake and you can turn in the length of the tractor.

My diff lock "pedal" is a 90 degree bend in about a 1/2" bar. It did stick down one time and I wasn't able to pull it up, after stoppin' the tractor. I found the bend was a bit more'n 90 degrees, and the bar was hangin' up on a bolt head on the fooot rest. Straightened the bend just a bit, now it hits the bolt head dead center and don't hang up.

I don't know about other equipment, but my equipment (JD4700 CUT and GatorHPX) aren't very good at turning while the rear differential is locked. If you have high traction tires (R1 or R4's), the two rear wheels are just going to push your equipment straight ahead even though the front wheels are turned. If the tractor is in FWD, you might be able to negiotiate a turn, but the front tires will plow thru the turn, and the rear inside tire is going to dig a mess in the ground. You have to allow for the rear's to disconnect before turning.

On my JD4300 I would ease up on the go pedal when one wheel lost traction then stomp on the dif-loc and hit the go pedal. It would stay locked until both wheels picked up an equal torque load, then drop out. With 1200hrs on the tractor my helpers started using it to plow snow(with the back blade). They would stomp on the dif-loc without letting up on the go pedal, letting the loc ratchet until it caught. I found this out after.... Now I will have to get the dealer to split the rear in order to repair it so now I use the brakes(after the dealer flushed the filings out of the system) Was handy for working in the bush while it lasted as I could not always take the time to spot which wheel was spinning while watching my FEL and any load I was dragging.....
