Did not know you could not put the same dirt back which will be mostly clay. I thought you would put in the rock and pipe then top off with the clay that was there. Is it because it would not pack or settle even. I can get top soil put back but will just be another cost. But I want to do it right.

Thanks

Roger

ACTBILL - That code makes it tough for the framers, huh? Kinda dangerous too!!! When I was a farmer I hated that.

You can use the clay if you back fill in 6"-8" lifts and put layers of sand between the layers of clay, and don't put any clay along the wall, try to put sand along the wall all the way to top.

I think I understand about not using clay as back fill. Would it be becasue the clay can expaned and shrink thus putting changing preasure on the wall and over time harm the wall. And if I would use rock drain tile sand / dirt this allows the water to move on by better than clay.

I sell real estate for a living and I have seen many poor jobs done by the home owner and with every ones help here and few friends in my area I am not going to be on that list.

Thanks all

Roger

Yeah, the framers are not real fond of theat rule. Sometimes we'll back-fill a corner (after the waterproofing & drain-work) with loose soil or sand so that they have an easier way to get on & off the deck than using plank ramps. or we'll just bite the bullet and build some braces inside the foundation. The only hard part then is getting the bracing material out of the foundation after the deck is on.

Sorry Roermo, didn't mean to hi-jack the thread!

Best,
BILL

minimax:

good point about the clay! We don't have to deal with that very often out here but the wrong back-fill material can lead to a very long nightmare even after the structure has been finished and occupied.

Best to use a pro cuz the potential for disaster is really really high.

BILL
