Tape the level onto a longer board [ eight feet ] for better results. Using the bubble the way you describe used to be common practice. Also used to use "Batter Boards" for setting the grade.
With the lasers available today you may be able to use one of them.
Would you be able to trench the existing ditch a little deeper so you have daylight from your lines?
Any tips for accomplishing the proper pitch? I plan on using a 3' level and letting the bubble just touch the black mark on the uphill side. Thanks for any replies.
