Mahindra Max 28XL
I've just read a scary book called "One Second After" that has me thinking about the susceptibility of my MAX 28XL to EMP. Does anyone know what digital devices are on that tractor? I've located a controller for the glowplugs, but cannot find anything else that would be damaged (other than the diodes in the alternator.)

diodes would be safe .... but anything with a "chip" would be toast ... as well as your watch, car, all home electronics, Iphone ... etc ....

don't worry about it ... anything to cause the EMP would cause a lot more damage to the rest of the world....

Exactly. Whether our tractors run or not after an EMP event will be the least of our worries..It will be TEOTWAWKI

Since most vehicles will be disabled, having the tractor, both for transportation and the ability to manage my land, strategically and for food production, and to just be able to move things around is going to go a long way toward surviving. I personally don't accept laying down and admitting defeat.

With a 1000 gallons of fuel stored so far, I plan on getting around even when TSHTF. It most certainly will be TEOTWAWKI, but I will be part of the new world.

Ok, Understand. Mine is parked in a grounded fully shielded metal building. I don't know if it will survive or not, It is full of microprocessors. I don't know where I am going to get any fuel, as I never have more than 10 gallons on hand.

i'm fairly certain i could get one of my old diesels running via mule power pulling it.. then once going should be fine with no electrics ..

Do you think my "Faraday shield" all metal building would protect my Kioti?

depends on the strength of the emp.

The russians did some testing and were able to burn up burried power lines miles away from the test site. :)

If the Fuel Injection on your tractor is still all-mechanical, then the Transmission is what I would look at next for electronics. Tractordata shows a shuttle-shift - I've no clue if those tranis commonly contain any electronics.

I'd want to know where the electronics live, not so much re. EMP induced by a major conflict, but rather:

1) If your tractor needs to have welding done.

2) Even long before the transistor era, solar flares have caused major havoc.

Solar storm of 1859 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Questions:

1) What special techniques are you using to store that much diesel fuel ? I know large farms will burn through that much fuel quickly..... Based on your Signature I'm assuming that your consumption rate is low - am I correct ?

2) Are there any insurance or other implications to storing that much fuel where you live ?

Rgds, D.

OK ... the EMP will fry the chips inside the tractor inside the steel building .... just like the capacitors will explode .... and most solenoids.... heavier wire might survive ( starters )

a mechanically fueled diesel will run ( on any oil ... transmission fluid , old oil, sunflower, peanut , etc ) after you spin the engine ( perhaps the starter will survive the pulse )

If it happens, I'm not worried... I can still go old school .... and rewind starters and alternators ... jury rig selenium rectifiers to make the diode bridge ... O/A torches and propane will still work for soldering connections....

As for storage, I can't go into this very much, but suffice to say forming alliances is the key. There are insurance issues that would need to be addressed IF the fuel is stored on your property. Mine is not, but it's real close by.

In my area, I can store up to 200 gallons on my property with no problem if it's stored in approved containers. Ones that boaters use for transporting and dispensing 100 gallons or so as well as the good old 5 gallon can.

Actually, there's a very good site that covers this topic (both EMP & GMP). Electromagnetic Pulse Protection - EMP - Futurescience.com

His discussion on galvanized trash cans to protect small electronic devices is very good. His testing method, (while even he states) is not 100% effective! is very good.

I have purchased spares of what I believe to be critical devices and have them wrapped and stored in those cans. That's why I started this thread in the first place. The gloplug controller is one of the units I have in storage. Have solar panels wrapped and lines shielded and have spare charge controllers and inverters also stored. Spare diodes and enameled wire for rewinding coils are also in there.

No one seems to definitively know if there are any other components on the tractor. I can't find any components listed in the parts manual other than the controller and diodes. Really didn't mean to make this such a protracted thread. Sorry.
