I don't know an easy, one click way to get the IP, but here's one way to do it:

Click Start
Click Run
Type: COMMAND and hit <ENTER>
Type: IPCONFIG and hit <ENTER>
Read the IP address
Type: EXIT and hit <ENTER>

Maybe someone could cobble up a script that would allow your Mom to do it with a couple of clicks - one to open it, one to get back to Windows after she's read it. Or, maybe someone knows a better way.

Here's a one click way if she's connected to the internet: set up a link or a favorite to http://www.whatismyip.com/ .

Yeah OkeeDon Thats the way I do it.
But was hoping for script that would sit on the desktop like an Icon she could just click once or twice and read me the numbers.... the best thing I guess would be to right it down and tape it to the top edge of the monitor so she can follow it from there. when she needs my help.

</font><font color="blue" class="small">( I'm curious as to what is worth $200 that I could not do myself for free....Can't be that difficult... )</font> The basic install of the hardware isn't that bad. The final alignment took a long time. The installers are have to go through training and are licensed by ther FCC. They will earn their $200. When mine was installed it took them over 6 hours to install, align, and then get the final approval from Starband.

yeah, I new about the training and so forth I researched it way back when 1st came out as 2way...It is some ware around 3K last I heard to go take the cert. plus expenses. But it just seems to me the FCC is being picky. While Relize these dish transmit in the Gig range and cand do harm especialy to the eyes if your silly enough to stand there.

I'm curious as to wether the FCC and Hughes are more concerned with quality and saftey than making the $ on the cert...

You would have to know though, that I have had a bit more experiance with microwave transmitters than some folk. I used to have a couple of cell towers that used them back when I worked as field Tech/Engineer for nextel. While no expert I do know they can be finicky at times. but if you know the right asmuth and so forth it should not be to difficult.

The tx and rx angle should be the same. So you could use software to get the right signal stregnth and such just the way u can use a tv to set up DTV...

I don't in any way begrudge a fellow making a living. I just rather do things my self....
Guess I'll know soon enough.

To get a static IP you need to upgrade services to business...$89 a month, static IP, and faster throughput...

I'm going to try to get by on the consumer plan with the business...if it doesn't work out I can upgrade the plan by phone or by the internet...

The thing I thought was hilarious...consumer equipment setup was only $100...business equipment setup was going to be like $500...but I can upgrade from consumer to business now for FREE + the $30 a month upcharge /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Paul,
You can access the http://www.whatismyip.com site, and then while in IE, go to File/Send/Shortcut to Desktop. Then rename that shortcut to whatever is easiest. That will give you the one-click IP address.

GareyD, it is funny I guess how they sell the same hardware to both the consumer and business but charge more to the business. I bet not many folks relize it and even have them come out and do equipment upgrades... I guess it pays to pay attention to the fine print.....

I did the lil speed test from work to see how fast my net connection is and it was only slightly faster than the 400kbs they advertise... But that is my connection alone. I don't know how many pc's I would want to be sharing that at a business.

It's a shame you have to pay $30 more for a static IP but they are in business to make money. So I 'm not suprised. I have been told though as long as you don't lose power to the modem on the cable DSL system you usually can hang on to the same IP. Often even if you do it will pick back up at the same address. I can see that as long as your whole nieghbor hood didn't loose power....

O' well guess I'll just have to talk to the IT man and see if it is a problem. If so I guess I'll just have to live with it. I don't work from home often enough to justify the $30.... I just try to stay home if I'm sick and know it's contagious. Flu and so forth....
I get ill with those that insist on coming to work and bring the flu.. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Now I think I'll go check out the Best FREE software list and start making a list of my own starting with Zone Alarm.....

Thanks all. I'll be back in a bit.......

A friend of mine wrote a little program to detect if his IP address changed (it didn't very often) and then if it did he updated his directory pointers to the new IP address. Worked fine for him it seems so that outside people could use his URL.

Of course, if the IP address changed you'd get an error when you looked for your home page and that would be a clue that the IP address changed. If this didn't work, you could then upgrade to the static IP address.

Been digging around the Tivo Forum I found Tivo Forum (search under DTV Receiver with Tivo) and it seems the USB ports on the DTV Tivo are not supposed to work yet and are for future options. I heard some one had hacked it and made them work. TIvo is Lynix based so it should be do able for those with the skills...

I guess I'll know soon enough unless someone else beats me to it......

I see once the warranty is up I may have to learn how to hack TIVO a lil.....

I did read DTV TIVO's will work with out the phone line after the initial set up but will nag you about the lack of a regular phone call.... Thankfully Programming is VIA sat...

Paul,
Here is a little Command Shell script that I wrote that you can put on her desktop. She can click it and then give you the numbers.... then press the a key and the window will go away.

Hope this helps.

I'm getting ready to finalize the installation of DirecWay. Comcast cable told me "it's not going to happen" because of the distance, so it's DirecWay for me now. The dish has been installed, but the electronics are just getting scheduled.

Any new developments recently? Or good or bad experiences to share on the installation and/or use? Thanks in advance for sharing.

We've been happy with it. I can't play on line games like Battle field 1942 because of the latency issue. But that does not effect the average stuff my wife and I do like surfing and send and receiving pictures and stuff. The average download speed is 300k. Upload speeds are limited but it's still much better than the phoneline ever was. I have linksys cable dsl, 4port and wirles, router that we use to run 2 pc's and soon my pocket pc.

What about your TV?

Did you do the DirecTV and DirecWAY?
On one dish?
Or two?

This might be a little off topic but we just recently got the option for IP over the power lines. Our local Coop is the first in the nation to begin service. Our neighbors got it and are pleased so far. I have cable with a 3mbps that costs $50 per month the Power company is charging $19 per month for 6ookbps not too shabby. The reason I mention it is that very shortly we should all have the option of buying internet and phone from several sources ie power company cable, phone, sat....
IP over the power lines is a really neat idea that should allow almost everyone to have high speed connections.

Ahh, yes on the powerline broadband.

BUT

Is this a pilot program? I have heard of numerous issues regarding legaleeze syurrounding this new oppertunity.

riptides, I chose to keep them seperate. It was a good $200+ to buy the extra equipment to put both on the same Dway dish. Also as mentioned by another I was hoping to give up the dway in few years. For some other form of wired DSL. The local phone co tells me 1.5 to 3yrs as of last March. That roughly translates to about 5 yrs from then.... /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Also I heard rumors of several power co's in the south offering the Power-line ? DSL some time soon. I know they have been testing it in Oklahoma and I then Virginia for a few yrs now. If Alabama power offers I'm there. I pay $65 a month buy the time they hit me with taxes and fees... and that with out a static IP and no Twitch Gaming.... Either case I chose keep it 2 dish's, mostly so I could easly keep my digatal TV connection and drop the Dway...
