My wife had been after me to add a second Direct TV receiver;I finally gave in.I have no connection to Direct Tv other than being a long time customer.
I should have done this before this long cold winter;anyway adding a second receiver,Genie and DVR is quite an eye opener.I also had to add a router for a WiFi connection to the internet.
What's to gain besides keeping the wife happy, ability to record any shows or set-up to pre-record up to five channels.I can now watch You-Tube on the T.V.
Best part is there is not going to be any additional cost.
Worth while move for anyone that already has Direct TV.

I did this last year and have been very happy with the service. I record lots of shows and use it more than I thought I would. It's nice to be able to fast forward through commercials as well (pre-recorded shows only). If I can make one suggestion it would be to keep your old remotes, they're much easier to use than the new ones they give you with the package.

Ditto, got the Genie added two months ago with a one year discount on it, our bill for this year is less than it had been the past two.

Google "Directv promotional department number" and call them once a year. You qualify for discounts you may not be aware of and they certainly won't tell you usually. If you've been a customer for awhile then they want to keep you and will find you all sorts of discounts. Your bill is somewhat negotiable so do not think the price is the price. They have all sorts of discounts and offers they never advertise.

I have been eyeballing this. I am a long time customer, and my contract has been completed months ago.

Any ideas about the costs associated with the upgrade?

I'm A Direct tv customer and I maxed out the promotion package for genies when I had it setup last spring. Its been a year now and for the most part its been super reliable. Only one time the was a hiccup getting signal for live tv, but I opted to watch one of my recorded shows just fine. I havent gotten the geniego yet but I am seriously thinking about it. If anyone wants a referral for directtv let me know I can do refer a friend credit for 100 dollars for which comes out to 10 a month for 10 months just pm me.

Been a DirectTV customer for 6 years now, and my wife called them to say we pay too much, what can they do. They told us about the genie program. The tech was here yesterday to make the changes. Real good service at a lesser price. We will stay on top of it now and call them every year.

Has anyone looked into Internet service through DirectTV?

The last TV I purchased(Samsung) is a "smart TV" which is basically a computer. This along with Direct TV opens all kinds of doors for t.v.viewing.I had upgraded my Amazon account to Prime,so now I can get free movies thru Amazon plus all the benefits from Direct TV.
A side note;I had purchased my TV last year but it wasn't compatible with "Prime",I called Samsung and they spent an hour on the phone correcting this problem, great service.
Other than the cost of the Amazon Prime my cost have gone down from what we had previously.

We upgraded our 4 Heitz-57 receivers to Genie wireless last week. We absolutely LOVE IT! Our total cost for installation and setup was $147. They basically gave us $600 worth of hardware for free. The cost of the upgrade is negotiable so their offer to you may vary.

One of the reasons I stay with dish is because DTV won't let me do my own install. you also have to pay rental on all the equipment. I don't want their idjits in my house. It was awful when I had Wildblue install satellite internet. The installer was terrible. Shouldn't have to call and threaten to leave to get better rates.

They send you surveys after you have an instillation done or even contact their customer service, and they take those surveys very seriously apparently. I've also been lucky in that the guy who did my initial installation gave me his card and I call him whenever I need something done or need new remote so I don't have to order one. We basically cut out the middle man and I get someone who knows what they're doing.lol

I got the Genie service a month or two ago. We love it. Don't connect to the internet and view the internet showings unless you have lots of internet download allotment available. My son put us over the monthly download limit in one day while watching movies off of the internet. I disconnected Direect TV from the internet ASAP!

I just got direct tv when I moved bout 6 months ago. My only complaint is cost. Previously I had TWC.

Now with century link which is about 1/2 the speed, and similar tv, I went from ~$110/month to $160/month. And thats the promo. It will go to ~190 after a year. But Its the only thing I can get. Dish is the same price.

I did pay the extra $100 upfront to get wireless. Same monthly price, just higher install cost. Nice not having to string wires between 4 tv's. Only have to run wires to the main one.

We got a special installation of only $39 dollars. Upping two more "boxes" to be able to record and store more programs was $15 more a month then what I was paying. My son "absorbed" that price increase. I didn't know you could go wireless.

We went with the Wireless Genie last fall. Went from a 2 tuner receiver and 3 additional boxes to now the Genie with 5 tuners and 3 wireless boxes. Ended up keeping the old DVR box as well. So now we have TV on 5 TVs and the ability to record 7 shows at once and watch any of them from anywhere. We paid no out of pocket (not even for the 3rd wireless which they didn't want to do until I pressured them a bit more) for the install and got a $20 month credit for 6 months.
