Dirt Road Material

   / Dirt Road Material #21
3/4" is all I have ever used for road base. I have been running construction equipment for about ten years, starting with building roads and runways in the army, always using 3/4" road base. Now I work at a quarry making the 3/4" road base. A lot of quarries will have a pile of reject road base that is so close To spec. it works great, they just can't sell it where there are specs such as highways and city streets.
The 3/4" minus locks together real well with vehicle traffic. The crushed stones lock together, and hold the fines in place. The fines also have their job of holding the bigger material in place by filling the gaps, therefore reducing movement. Both should work fine, I just prefer the 3/4", because that's what was always required and what I have always used.

Around here a "dirt road" is just that, DIRT, the next option is gravel (crushed limestone). I prefer nothing bigger than 3/4", then when packed good, my drive gets only 3/8" "chips". The 3/8" makes a much better surface for walking, but I wouldn't use it on a long drive or "lane".

Picture is the county line road at the farm! ~~ grnspot
