I have tried to find some threads on tractor and equipment modifications to aid those with disabilities, especially those trying to continue farming. If any one knows of some such threads, or (if appropriate) would like to contribute, please do. I happen to be running an interactive TV site at the moment where the University of Vermont Extension Service is actively attempting to help disabled and/or older farmers make tractor and implement modifications to help keep them "on the farm".

Moderators; Please let me know if this is not appropriate, or belongs in another discussion.

Thanks,

Tom

Tom, take a look at this link, it is pretty amazing. Unfortunately it is not a discussion forum, but it will show you what can be done.

Here is another link that you might want to look at: AgrAbility Project site

And here is another site to help you out: West Virginia Agri-Ability site

I was digging around a while back and knew there would be some reason to store those sites in my memory bank. I didn't know why they would be useful, but I hope they prove to be useful to you.

Tom,

I don't see ANYTHING wrong with you posting this question in this forum. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

In fact, it may be more applicable than a lot of others that get posted here. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bob,

Thanks. That's great. I'll show that to the Ext. Service rep who is looking for this kind of information.

Gary,

Thank you. I hoped, with all the expertise on this site, it could be of a lot of benefit to those who could use a little help.

The publication FarmShow (.com) has had a number of examples of custom modifications and/or devices specifically for the disabled. They also have a CD with over 25 years of back issues for about $40. Most of their articles are submitted by readers and provide contact information for the source. There is a lot of good information and ideas among the "chaff" so to speak.

Tom,

Drop an e-mail to Steve Carver of Carver Equipment. He is a dealer, member and advertiser here on the forum that has done a fair amount of modifications for handicapped customers over the years. Real nice guy and I'm sure he would be willing to share some thoughts with you.

To all,

Thank you for the info and links. I have no specific needs. I started this to tap into your expertise for the benefit of the UVM Extension Service's attempts to help farmers with disabilities. The disability may be as simple as difficulty breating in the heat and the fix may be as easy as adding a sun shade/roof on the ROPS. Or, something like arthritis and adding a quick hitch to make some one's life a bit easier. However, the problems could be much more restricting, requiring more significant modifications.

I gave this thread information to the Extension Service co-ordinator doing this work in Vermont. Hopefully, he is following the thread and will contact folks as specific needs arise. If I get a chance to talk to Brett (didn't get last name) again, I'll remind him of the thread and see if he has come up with any specific needs.

Thanks all.
