Disappointed with Tractor Buying tips on RFDTV

I am with MilkMan on this.

Seems like RFD was trying to fill a need but did not do a good job of production and it seems like JD had folks that were not ready to answer such specific questions. Normally a product person has a technical counter part......I thought they should have had them all paired up to answer some of those questions.

Maybe they can do better next time and giving equal time to NH, Kubota, etc

Before everybody keeps bashing Deere it was their dime that paid for the airtime!!! I think they had the right to run the show the way they saw fit. Everyone on rfd-tv pays to be there. You don't get a free ride there. If kubota, NH, etc. wanted to step up and pay for airtime they could certainly do the same show if they wanted.

I recorded the show and watched it in its entirety. Some thoughts I have about it are that the on-air folks tried hard, but the pre-show planning (or lack of planning) failed them.

This appeared to be a marketing department response to newbie buyers like me, and hard to fathom that a major corporation's production would have stalled in so many places. Just very poor planning and direction. On the other hand, the amateurish effort did lend the show a low-fi, aw shucks, backyard kind of feel that RFDTV strives for in their identity. The FFA show aired prior to the Deere program was similarly clumbsy, though it pandered to the "ain't us good old boys great" mentality that gets on my nerves. At least the Deere folks spared us that.

Some changes I hope they consider if they run the show again:

Someone suggested that they produce it at a dealership, with plenty of tractors and implements to show, which is an excellent idea, and I would suggest that they walk through the lineup of small to larger tractors with a brief discussion about the capacities and appropriate tasks for each size. Then, for the implements, they should have a half dozen of the most common attached and demo them briefly; say a bush hog, finish mower, FEL, BB, tiller and snow blower. Then, they should just mention some of the other useful tools for tractors like grapples, forks and post hole diggers to give the newbie a better understanding of the range of things we can do with these amazing machines.

When I was in school I took one of those "interests and aptitudes" tests and one of the three careers it recommended I consider was television director. Now, I can see where that all came from. Action.

I say we ask them to host another show but let them direct all the questions at Junkman instead. I'm thinking that one would really be entertainment at its finest. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I am still amazed that it takes 70 hp to run a 24 inch post hole auger.
Considering that even the heaviest JD Post hole digger has a #3 PTO shaft (35 HP) and JD says 18 HP is needed.

Deere did a good job pushing their stuff but the older Guy (Plant MGR) saved the 2 city slickers from total embracement when the AG questions started being asked.

What irks me most is the stuff about the hydraulic couplers is pure the dealers fault not JD's fault. When a dealer orders a tractor they can save $200 if they order it without the rear couplers and then they always can charge the customer more for adding the kit on later because they know you will need the rear couplers. A dealer should order 5020 & 5025 series tractors fully equipped and if someone wants a stripped model sell them the 5003 or 5005 series. I'm a Deer man but this is where Mahindra skins Deere because their tractors come fully loaded. Deere is very smart about some ergonomics but loses sight of the market in other areas but you see Deere has paper pushing managers making some decisions. The best people to ask about the features and benefits are the operators not the suits.

JD should push their own stuff it is high quality but as the TBN members know there are other brands that are equal or exceed JD's products.

I give them an E for effort. They needed to have better focus, and better product features analysis. Could have started with the X series or 2210, explained the HP ratings, capabilities, a few specs like weights major options, then hit the little 4 series, the 3000-20's, 4000-20's, and then maybe the 5000's taking some time to point out why one woould be better suited than the other.

As for calls, they should have been screened, and whoever was in the control room should have had the callers ready to go rather than the huge delays with some calls...

I hope to see them add more programming like this in the future!

I watched it until about halfway through the questions from the callers and gave up at that point.

They should have had a good dealer on the show that knew how to sell the tractors. Several of their answers were "talk to your local dealer".

I was disappointed but if JD wants to throw money at RFDTV it is OK with me.

There are numerous folks on this forum that would have been much better than the 3 factory folk.

I thought the young lady who does the "Country Living" segments was the best part of the show. She does a good job of explaining things. I was watching her the night before and she had some really pretty chickens that she raises. At least I learn something from her.

Lots of valid criticisms, and I agree with most of them, as well as the suggestions offered to improve this type of show. However, wasn't this much more entertaining/informative than most of the other junk on television?
