Disc harrow to Buy?

/ Disc harrow to Buy? #21
Maybe you should get a good heavy duty rock rake ( landscape rake or root rake) to get rid of as many rocks as you can. If you have a box (scraper) blade you may need to extend the scarifier shanks down as far as possible, keeping the moldboard off the ground, to loosen up the rocks first. Then use the tiller. Kuhn (pronounced coon) makes a good heavy duty tiller. You will need to decide if you want a gear or chain driven tiller and if you want one with gauge wheels or just skids. As with all tractor implements there are a lot of options to consider.

Re: Disc harrow to Buy? vs. Tiller

Bird,

What brand is your tiller? Does anyone have any experience with the LandPride tiller?

In reference to the Disc, I use an 8' Miller Offset (drag type) that pretty well breaks up, every thing in its path. however, then its time to drag(harrow) the pasture to break up the clods and get a seed bed prepared. If you are farming on a large scale, I highly recommend this method. Otherwise the tiller is unbeatable.

As for the rock's, If you have children and an understanding wife. You have built in Rock Pickers. NOT!

Re: Disc harrow to Buy? vs. Tiller

Cowboy, my tiller is a Bush Hog RTS40 (40") which was perfect for the B7100 and my only complaint with it behind the B2710 is that I can't cover both rear tracks, so I have it offset to the right to cover the right track (like Wen has done on bigger scale/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif). I think the RTS series is considered to be their lighter duty line with a self adjusting chain drive, but this one has seen some very heavy duty use and just keeps on going.

Hi ya's
i'd say it would take me about 4 hours to do 10 acres with a power harrow/seeder in good going but 1 thing i have found is rip with tines frist it makes the job faster and less wear ,disc harrows do a good job if the ground is right but can make it too fine as well to flatern your working pull a big set of chain harrows behind or by themselfs if Hp is on the low side ,as for run off try to leave as much trash on top that you can or even think of direct drilling (no till seeding)i used to spend hours on end working ground only to watch it run off each time it rained but all hills on this farm now are no-till seeded
each to there own idea
catch ya
