The best sod removal I have found is to first cut all the grass off with a disc or sickle bar mower, rake and bale, then either spring tine cultivate or turn it over with a regular plow.
Disc and work up from there.
Removing the tops of the grass makes is 1000% easier.

I ended up purchasing a Tufline 61/2 foot disc harrow for $1400.00. It has 20" sealed bearing discs (front on 9" centers with rear on 7"), a box frame, and weighs about 750 lbs. It has been a pleasure to use so far- very heavy duty. GKT

I used a 6 foot medium duty KK disc to work up 2 acres for my lawn a few weeks ago. heavy weeds and sod, all mowed short. It was a mixture of soft topsoil and heavy packed and dried out clay from digging the basement. I added a couple hundred pounds to the disc. I made one pass very slow to let the discs cut the sod, then several passes in higher gear. The sod turned perfectly. The landscaper who helped seed the lawn the nest day planned on using a bobcat tiller. He was shocked at the job that disc did. He even said he will look into getting a disc for his bobcat now!

I am looking at this 8 ft. for a Kubota 6040. Looks heavy and is a "Long" brand. any comments appreciated.

Has anyone mentioned soil moisture content? I've found that with our dark clay soils if you don't catch the moisture just right you aren't in the game. If it's to wet it'll plug your discs. If it's to dry I don't care how much weight you put on it, it won't dig. I've got a huge old Kewanee 14' offset tandem and it'll dig just about anything if everything is right. The only things it has a hard time with are piles of down hay and clumps of coastal.
I have also found that if it's to moist, the discs plug and you might as well go to the house and wait a day for it to dry a little.
