Disc how much

I have a welder and iF it's on steel too big for mine I can weld and I know people with big welders I can borrow. A buddy logger I have has a big snap on MIG I will burn it back togeather if I break it. I will keep piling weight on top of mine

My friend who farms some 200 acres, mostly orchard, some grapes, says a proper disk made for primary cultivation will pull itself into the ground and doesn't need ballast beyond its rather heavy chassis. Disking my orchard, he makes a pass in one direction then another at right angles. Those two passes are all it needs.

Disc Harrow weight is mostly in the pans and axles, not the hollow box frame. Hence pan diameter is the key metric for Disc Harrow ability to penetrate.

Notched pans aid penetration. 9" pan spacing aids penetration. However, pan diameter is key.
( Pan thickness is relevant too, but this data is impossible to find for assembled Discs because of pan taper. However, pan thickness is expressed indirectly as part of total Disc Harrow weight. )

Monroe Tufline in photo has 20" diameter pans. Over land that is tilled annually, meaning soft soil, I must run L3560 tractor at full throttle in HST/MED/4-WD to maintain four miles per hour, required for good soil mixing. Not enough weight bearing on each pan for Primary Tillage, but good for Secondary Tillage with one pass. Unusually, perhaps unique with Tufline, 9" pan spacing on front/cutting gang, 7-1/2" pan spacing on rear/smoothing gang.

An OFFSET DISC is specifically designed for Primary Tillage. Offset Disc requires a heavy, powerful tractor.

I use a 12" moldboard plow for occasional Primary Tillage, most frequently establishing or renewing fire breaks. Infrequently I renew compacted pasture with the plow.

I couldn't tell you what type disc my BIL has, but I have pulled it without much of a problem.
The disc on the one he has is adjustable . you adjust the disc one way and they really dig into the ground. I don't know if they all are made this way or not.

Angle Iron frame Disc Harrows are usually NOT adjustable.

Ninety-nine percent of Box frame Disc Harrows are adjustable in three to five increments. Method of adjustment varies a great deal in speed and convenience. In my opinion Disc Harrows from everytfhingattachments.com, with individual screw adjustment for the front and rear gang angles, have the most practical harrow adjustment.

Reading T-B-N daily, and cogitating on posted photos, it is apparent most, not ALL, Disc Harrow owners set the implement to aggressive angles upon arrival, then never adjust again.

You are correct. As are others. Proper tillage disks cut all the way on one pass.

But I have the tools I have at my disposal. It is a 4.5foot disk and a small 2wd tractor. If I have to make multiple passes to plant food plot for deer so be it.

Just letting others who may be in a similar situation as me know it can be done.

I looked for years for a small bottom plow for primary but gave up cause I wouldn't pay what folks wanted. Never found one reasonable

Thank you every one for your input think I'll go for a tiller 48in-54in.

I'm way up north near Tupelo. I follow Craigs list with a passion and have gotten a lot of bargains off it. That being said 4 to 5 foot tillers in decent condition show up VERY rarely. And even more rarely in the spring. You might just want to go out and buy one.

Same here, finally bought a cheap Howse. Rarely use it but works fine.

If it helps someone else decide what to buy/avoid: Here's my old post (with photos) trying a 5'9" then a 3'9" disc with my 24 hp, 2wd Yanmar. Only the smaller one was usable.

This is very soft ground, it has been in cultivation for a century.

And another post, with photo, trying out the rototiller that was specifically sold in Japan by Yanmar to match this model tractor.
