Disc vs Sickle Bar

I have no experience with the "disc" type mowers out there, but they seem to be a lot of them. Could anyone tell me what the difference is in cut or use of disc mowers compared to sickle bar mowers.

Best I can tell from the little info I have come across is that the disc type are heavier and cost more but from what I have seen when I have seen one mowing is nothing spectacular compared to sickle bar mower.

Would appreciate some of your experiences comparing these types.

No anthills. Just basic pasture and hay ground mowing. Just interested in the differences between the two types and what makes disc mowers so popular compared to sickle bar.

I do trim up hillside terraces and road ditches.

Disc mowers allow you faster ground speed plus you can cut when the field is still wet if you so desire.

Sickle mowers have a bar with teeth on it that goes back and forth, just like a beard trimmer on an electric razor. It is a very old design with many drawbacks. Rocks, tree branches, fence posts and other "hidden" objects are very hard on the cutters. When you cut the hay, it leaves it at the cut length, laying where it was cut. If you plan on baling the grass/hay, is will still need to be raked and conditioned. The initial cost, and repair costs are lower than disc cutters. Disc cutters are much like a lawn mower. If you are refering to farm disc cutters, they will condition and windrow the grass/hay too. If you are refering to mowing type disc cutters, there are various grass discharge options. Some of the more modern farm discbines for cutting hay allows you to run really high ground speeds, upwards of 10mph!!!
