The pricebooks that you find online have dealer cost stripped out of them. Hidden in code in our paper books is actual cost, the list price is there partly so prying customer eyes (like yours :) ) end up seeing the list price rather than the actual dealer cost. The difference between list and cost is different depending on the product, it also does not take into account any programs that maybe running at he time, setup costs, etc. I know some dealers do total it up for a customers and show a "huge" discount off that big number down to their actual selling price. Unless your doing that, there is no reason to ever calculate the list price.

That said.. when the dealer's quoted price is the same or similar to the published list price it does tell you something. Unless you would have me believe that the actual dealer cost is higher.

When I sit with the dealer and they open the wholegoods list to develop a price I wouldn't consider that "prying eyes." It is also published in numerous places on-line. I must say I rather resent the comment.

I agree and have always understood that as stated above by you the 'published' wholegoods price does not represent the dealer's cost or the promotions. Many dealers in the New England area are always very close to 85 to 90% of the wholegoods price on a complete tractor. Without a full online tool from Kubota the wholegoods list is a reasonable thing to consider.

With that my thoughts and comments on the subject are ended.

The wholegoods price list is the only consistent reference point that we, as consumers, have to compare against. Obviously, the dealer cost will be much lower than that price. Since 85% of the wholegoods price seems to be about the best numbers out there, that means one of a couple things: Either Kubota regulates the amount of discount pretty tightly, or we've gotten pretty close to the dealer's bottom line, or dealers have agreed to go no lower than that.

From the consumers point of view, we can be very thankful for the internet. Competition used to be limited to dealers within a very small radius of one another. Now consumers are routinely getting prices from other regions of the country, and buying from other regions of the country. I'm guessing dealers don't like it much, but it sure helps the consumer.

This topic is a big can of worms, isn't it.... :(

All that said, I'm happy with my tractor, the price I paid, and the service I've gotten.... :)
