Most people have to buy sand here too. Of course, it's screened or is a special mix to use as cushion sand under concrete slabs. I think a bobtail truck + pup load (about 20 yards) is around $180. But of course, the big price you pay is for hauling. Normally the sand or crushed rock is pretty cheap at the source.

We have a good sized pond that we own on our property here in CT. The state last year finally allowed the beavers to be trapped. Funny thing is, when allowed, there is 8 inches of ice or more in the pond. In other words, the state is circumventing the animal activists groups by allowing trapping, only when it is in ice glacial form which is totally useless. Several years ago as the highway dep't, and 100 feet from where I now am and back into Massachusetts, I was turned in for breaking a beaver dam with the backhoe. Fish and game wardens didn't care that this one dam costs the town over 38 grand in damage by washing out a total road. A major road at that. For years we had chain link anchor fencing blocking ten feet from the culvert. That year, excessive rains, then the beavers built up and over the fencing.. One night it all decided to let go, taking culvert, road and all. Had Chase precast custom make a 8 X 5 ft box culvert, four pieces together, installed, then a month later the beavers back at it again. This, is when I decided to take the backhoe and break their new dam. Not fun dealing with another state institution regardless of damage proof.. Jinman you are lucky that you have options and not have to look over your shoulder every second. Of course here, homes are fairly close, lot's of traffic, and it is not easy to fire a weapon and pop em..

Mark, the pile is over 14' wide at the bottom and over 40' long. If it were only 3' tall, that would be around 150 yards, so I think my prior post was off. I believe there is 200 yards there. Counting the 50 yards I removed before, that works out to at least 750 trips since my loader holds 1/3 yard. Actually, I doubled up my load by dragging a boxblade load along with the FEL bucket full, so now we are back to about 500 trips. Whew! I knew there was a reason it took two days and about 15 gallons of diesel, but I hadn't realized how many trips I made until you got me to figgerin'. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Even so, this location is remote and there is no way to get to it with a dozer or excavator without taking out a lot of trees. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif The biggest job was getting it cleaned out so water will drain. If I keep removing the silt every year, I won't have this big of a job in the future. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

What did they do to you? Is there a big fine for killing or trapping beaver? I have a tiny island in an inlet from the lake that I used to call "snake island" until the water got low enough for me to see all the tunnels. Now I've renamed it "beaver island." The whole thing looks like swiss cheese and there are probably as many snakes making their home in there as there are beavers. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

To anyone interested, you're welcome to come and hunt my remaining beaver or catch some of my catfish. Here's a big fat one...the catfish is pretty big too. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif It's probably illegal to have this much fun. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif (see attachment)
