I've got 3 cyl Ford 2000 gasser and was having trouble finding out what the biggest size discs that the tractor could handle. Wheel base is 74 inches I believe. I was looking at one for sale that was a 6'er that weighs 1831#. Not only am I wondering what the biggest weight wise I could run with the hydraulics, but also taking into effect HP to use them effectively. I know it'd be hard to say exactly with variables such as soil and angles of the discs, but just a general guideline is all I'm really looking for. Thanks in advance.

**Edit : maybe I should rephrase my question since it seems to come off differently than I intended. I have no desire to run some giant set of discs as it may have sounded like I was asking. I think the better way to have asked would have been, what is the most appropriately sized set of discs for my tractor? And would the discs that I mentioned earlier be a good fit?

I have a 6' Massey-Ferguson Model 22 I pull behind my 3 cyl. 2000, similar to the one in the image below. In mellow ground, at full cut, it handles it pretty well, but don't know that I'd want to try a 7 footer.

My personal preference is one like this with, with adjusting handles to set the cut. Full cut to knock down plowed ground, or rough up sod in the hay field in the fall, if I want to frost seed in the Spring. Or in the garden in the Fall to cut up foliage, prepping to put a cover crop on. Set to full cut to cut up foliage, seed the cover crop, then set the disk to straight, or nearly straight to get the seed covered a bit.

Each gang on this one will float independently a bit, where many have a rigid frame and will ride up if they hit a high spot leaving uncut ground. And adjusting on that type, I'm guessing most you have to unbolt gangs, and set where you want.

What kind of 6' disc did you find that weighs 1800lbs? I'm skeptical of that weight.

6-6.5' dual ganged disc are likely fine.

You MIGHT get an 8' pull type to run in soft soil.

I'd go 6-6.5

Thanks for the input from everyone, I'll hopefully be getting a set soon.

I agree with you, I thought 1800 lbs sounded reap high and that's what prompted me to making this post. Most I've seen have been in the 7 or 800 lb range for the 6' discs and when I saw this other one, it made me think there was a wide range of 6 footers out there so I figured I'd make a post here. I'm really starting to think the guy mightve made a typo, and instead of a 1831#, I'm wondering if he meant 831# which make alot more sense.

Much more sense even 800 lbs is one of the high end boxed frame sets from Brown or Land Pride the cheap sets from Tractor Supply are more in the 400-500lb range. Weight means everything with a disc.

I'd say the #1881 is the inventory number. Looks like it's setting on an equipment jockey lot.

Overall, not a bad looking disc for the money. At least it is adjustable. You'll love that feature. The only thing I can see that is wrong, is the top link hookup is bent. Nothing that can't be straightened with some heat, and a BFH, or a hydraulic press.

I'd definitely check to make sure it adjusts OK, and make sure the casting the adjusting crank threads though is not cracked, or broken. I'm going to take a wild guess, and say that top link hookup was bent, when loading up at the sale it was bought from, or as many do when they get a lot of bargains at a sale, double stack items, and something was set on it, or fell over on it, and bent it.

I think you're right about that. I never thought about that and didn't originally see all the other equipment lined up behind it too. I guess after alot of the other posts I looked at having the weights listed, I assumed this guy was just being disslexic (or however it's spelled) and put the # in front of the number instead of after it. For the price of it though and the condition it appears to be in in the picture, it does make me question whether somethings wrong with it for that price. If it was a private party selling it, I wouldn't think anything of it, but being it appears a buisness has it, it does seem a little on the cheap side. I'll have to give the guy a call tomorrow and see what he says
