Do scalloped discs work any better than round ones?

In trashy ground, yes. The vegetation is turned and cut better with scallops.

My experience has been that they cut up sticks and other surface material better. They seem to work in hard ground better.

Serrated disks are my preferred disk, others will vary. ;)

Scallops are king. Trash, hard ground, sod, sticks. They eat it all faster/better and like it.... compared to the "smoothies"

On lighter disc harrows, which tend to have thinner discs, the scalloped/notched type are somewhat prone to bending at the notch if a hard rock is impacted.

So your soil rock content should be considered.

In my part of Florida, where the few rocks we have are soft lime rock, I pull notched discs on both front and rear gangs.

As jeff9366 stated, rocks are problematical. I've had to replace several blades because of bending. A couple of them had some of the scallops break completely off.

Just mechanically, it would seem that the solid blades would last longer than the scalloped. They all wear however.

The scallops do penetrate the ground better because the weight of the disc blade is concentrated on a "point" rather than spread over a larger contact area.

Those in the know have recommended scallops in the front gang(s) and smooth in the rear(s).

The scollopsed discs will be round all too soon, anyway. :(

Sometimes we all run across a no brainer heck of a deal and buy what we run into , but I like "Scalloped" disc . Even on my plow coulter wheels.
