GWS, you beat me to the fact that dish has 9 of them, and they also have 500 programs and direct doesn't have that many. I have had dish for over 5 years and no problem, except in very heavy rain. And we only have the basic, which with dish is abut $24.00 a month, I think it is, we pay by the year so we only pay 11 months to get 12, and I believe its like $274 a year. Where direct you have to pay $34 for the least package they have. The 50 some with dish is as much as my wife and I want to watch. But the best way is to go to the web sites and see what they offer for the price, what stations and that way you get the ones you want. Other wise a lot of the time you may be buying something you would never watch.

I had Dish for several years and I DID have a problem with signal loss during bad weather. No obstructions. Went on the roof several times with a phone to listen to the signal meter and fine tuned. Great till a storm comes. On the east coast, our dish looked southwest, which coincidentally is where most of our heavy storms come from. I never had to look at the Weather Channel to know if storm ws coming, just wait for the dish to go out and react.
Got Digital Cable about 6 months ago. No apparent difference in picture quality, just less aggravation. Costs about the same for comparable package.
The only thing I miss is RFDTV.

Yes I like RFD also, I wonder if direct has it also. As far as loseing the signal, that will happen with any small dish, like they both have. Of course I know of people that has lost signal with cable also.

If I lived near the TV stations I would put up one of those omni-directional antennas that fits on the back of the dish. But where I live it takes about a 12-footer.
Never had a problem with dish replacing my hardware after it failed. Simply said I was going to switch if I didnt get new equipment. I point out they were giving new people new hardware and I was a long time subscriber and should get the same treatment.

Dish, Why?, does it matter really but I liked their programming a price was cheaper. Cable, well, if they had cable here I would likely be on it but there is NO cable. Storms that come around to the southeast do interfere with programming if it is severe weather. I only watch Fox, CNN, Discoverey, Weather Channel and a few other things, no time to sit on the couch and watch TV programs and other PC brainwashing. J
GWS, I have had one problem with dish. I've been with them for over 5 years, and have the 18" dish. I would like to have the 20" 500 dish. So that I could get the western and true channel, for about $5 a month. So they tell me that I will have to upgrade to the 100 station program, for 1 year and pay $24.95 if I won't take autopay, which I won't for I pay by the year, it's cheaper. I told them it's not fair, as I paid $200 for it back then, and now a new customer can get it free, just by takeing any program, even the 50 that I use. They tell me, that is their rules and they can't help it. So that is one gripe I have with them, but I pay only like around $22 a month, by paying by the year, where as Direct, I would have to pay around $34, and cable here is $37 a month. It seems like they have me, if I want to get any of the rerun channels they all use.

So take it a bit further. When you want to cancel your dish do it via the phone. They then transfer you to a "consulatant" to close out your account. The "counsultant" job is to talk you out of it. Tell them why. They worked the issues out. Free upgrade and install for me. I did have to commit to 1 year of service but that wasnt an issue for me.

I was purusing this thread while on the phone with the DirecTV folks on Sunday! I'll be ripping out Adelphia (shoddy cable TV and internet service, regular email interruptions, frequent billing errors, and a $10 increase after one year!) and installing DirecTV on 10 October. Wifey did all the legwork.....I'd rather not mess with phones, TV, or internet while home.
Glad to see most are happy with DirecTV, and dish service in general....one problem: satellite internet service is $60/mo. Oof!! We'll be creeping along on dial-up for a while, I'm afraid.

If you want a good dial up. I use intergate.com I pay by the year and its only $8.00 a month. It's $10.00 a month, if you pay by the month. I've had most of them, and its the best I have had. I'll probably keep it for a long time. I had one that was only 15 miles from me, and it was good to, only they were getting bigger and wanted me to help pay for it, it was going up about $1 every few months. It got to $18.00 a month and I say enough.
