I'm considering dumping my cable service and going with satellite. Is there a real difference in the basic programming, customer service or signal delivery between these two providers?

I'm in the DFW area with a clear view of the southern sky. $35/month for 60 channels plus locals and DVR (Dish) sounds a lot better than what I'm getting for $45/month with analog basic cable. DirecTV is $9 more, but has more channels.

Can anyone recommend one service over the other? Thanks!

Bill,

Dish does not have the Yankees but Direct TV does. I am sure you want to see how A Rod will be doing in NY??

Doug,
I'm pretty happy with my free dial-up service from SBC (free with DSL at work), so internet access isn't an issue. Not only is it free, it's pretty darn fast for dialup. Besides, I'm usually just reading TBN posts, anyway. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Tom,
I didn't much like the Yankees to start with, and here's another reason to root for anyone else. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Obviously, Tom Hicks has more money than baseball smarts. George seems to have plenty of both. Strike 1 for DirecTV! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I don't think you can put FAST and DIAL-UP in the same sentence, there is no such thing. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We got Dish Network a couple of years ago. Pay 40/mo for their intermediate option with local channels. Thought it was more that 60 channels, but there are so many that we find useless (MTV, shopping, cartoons and others) that the total number is not very important.

Can't fault the service. Only problems have been when the storm clouds are too heavy and block the signal. That is rare here in Arizona.

When I compared before I bought, DirectTV prices did not compete.

reb,

I checked the channel line-up again, and the $30 Dish package doesn't have a few of the channels that we watch, including Fox News! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Strike 1 for Dish. The $40 package + $5 for the DVR option brings it pretty close to DirecTV - and our current cable bill. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Inertia (and local radar) may keep us with cable.
