My Leinbach Line disk harrow got bent. I had to cut the nut off to get it apart.
Upon taking it apart, I was surprised to find
the shaft is round while the disks and spacers have square holes.

Is this common? OR Perhaps this was a previous owners inappropriate repair....?

Don't throw the old discs away - turn them into discadas and cook some hamburgers and fries on them!

The round axle with square discs is common on smaller equipment. I would not worry much about it.

A lot of replacement discs are punched square with little crescents punched out of the sides so they fit both round and square arbors of a certain size. Eg; 1" square and 1-1/8" round. Discs punched for 1" square arbors work fine with 1" round arbors.
when you reassemble the gang get it tighter than anything you have ever assembled in your life.

I did one by filling the axle hole and welding a horse shoe on each side for handles.
