Disk = Harrow? What do you call a disk?

There are disc harrows and disc plows.............they look a lot alike, but, they do different things.

A "harrow" be it spring, spike or disc is designed to break-up rough tillled ground, busting clods, clumps, and smooth gouges. It is not a tillage piece but rather a conditioning tool.

Plows? There are disc plows which are heavier which are intended as the primary tillage tool that bust new ground and attempt to condition in the same pass.

Disc works much better in soil with plant debris and/or numerous rocks.

Take a look over in the Yanmar forum for a thread on pto speed. Just posted a couple pics with a tiller in action and what soil looked like afterwards. A disk will not produce this kind of results.

This was an old post of mine about tilling depth with a CCM tiller. This is how my soil looked after tilling. Jay

I had never heard disc and harrow used together until I found this board and I have been around farming all my life. Around here discs are primary tillage implements. I have seldom seen a plow being used. I think we have different conditions and terminology here in the valley than most the rest of the country.

Nice disk Hugh. I really like those Tuf-Lines. They look to be a notch above the rest.

But, you didn't put any text in your post.....maybe you're adding a second post as I type this one. I think I get the point of the pictures though. With my new disk I could not get it set up so that the outside rear disks would not leave a deep furrow. I tried several angles and even changed the location of the disks along the rear gang.

I'm assuming the device in your pictures is a disk for covering that furrow.

So, does it work? If so, where did you get it? How does it attach? How much did it cost?

And I guess the last question is does it matter if the rear outside disk leaves a furrow. It aint pretty, but is it really a problem?

I am a rookie but my neighbor who grew up with C model Allis Chamers and now has a Ford Jubile just disc up his field nice and level. He uses a 2 disc plow. I will try to get some pictures as it is an interesting set up. It has 2 wheels that look like railroad wheels then disc with a standard looking disc pict included. He says the secret is using a mild angle make sure front and rear gangs are level and don't disc deeply. Usually I do the opposite and is why I get the deep furrows.

The picture with the deep furrows was before I had the cover disc. I will try to get some new disc pictures.

There is such a thing as a disk plow. Sounds like what you are describing. But as I understand it, a disk plow is a plow, not a harrow.

Hugh, where did you get that cover disk? Is it just for Tuf-Line disks?

The pict you posted is what my neighbor pulls witold Jubile but his set up is massive.

If the end of the rear disc has a knob, the cover disc can be attached. I ordered it from Wendall at Wilson Tractor, Newberry SC
