Hello All,
I just recently purchased a used disk and have some questions for those that have been around a while. it is called a Towner and has 2 rows of disks, I beleive the rows are both adjustable.
It appears that on the front row of disks, one one side the disks are much larger on one side versus the other. Does this mean I should replace them?
Also, when working the dirt with these, how do you know what angle is best to set it up?
Thanks all,
Rick

Need a photo of your disc to answer your questions.

I have two old discs. An offset disc that may be a Towner (not sure, no ID markings)

The blades are 18" dia. However, the outer two blades on the right front gang were worn to about 16" dia so I replaced all the blades on this gang. Ag Supply has these for about $12 each.

I also have an old Ferguson tandem finishing disc

Both of these old-fashion discs have design features that allow the disc to be set in neutral position (all blades parallel to the direction of travel) while making turns. This reduces the side loads on the blades and prevents excessive banking of the soil in turns.

The Ferguson disc requires a special adapter for a standard 3-point hitch that I plan to build in the next few months.

The very outside blade on some disks is smaller, so it does not ridge or throw dirt so far.

Otherwise, all blades on a row should be same size.

It is common to reblade only the front row & leave the rear row smaller; but it makes a poorer disk out of it, all blades should be the same size. It will ridge a bit of the front gangs throw more dirt than the rear gangs.

Blades are pretty expensive these days, good luck. Shoup is a good mail order place to start.
