I just recently found this site but have enjoyed reading all the topics and gaining some great insight into tractors and their implements. I am looking to prepare a 10 acre plat of land to use as a pumpkin patch (and possibly some corn) next spring. Hopefully this topic has not been covered here before but I am wondering what I need to prepare the field this fall. Would you guys recommend plowing or discing the land? I am planning to use a 1954 International Super M (40 hp). This land has been not been tilled for several years as the farmer that previously farmed it was receiving subsidies. Soybeans were grown on the land this year. I do not own any implements for the tractor currently so I will have to purchase the implement that you guys feel will work the best. I have a 3 point on the tractor so I will probably be buying a TSC Farm Force plow and/or disc depending on your recommendations. Also I am looking at a pull along 3, 4 or 5 plow however, I don稚 know which one my tractor has enough power to pull. If you guys could answer what projects I would use a plow for and what projects I would use a disc for I would greatly appreciate it. Any tips you guys can give me to prepare the land this fall for planting pumpkins next spring would also be greatly appreciated.

Chances are a disc will work just fine for you. For a plow maybe stick to three bottoms but you may be able to handle four if the soil conditions are right.:D

You could also consider a cultivator and change shovels as required.

I probably would plow the soybean stubble under this fall and plant a cover crop. Next spring I would do a soil test and fertilize or lime as necessary. You will plow the cover crop under next spring and then disc, harrow, and plant.
I would not pull anything bigger than a 3 bottom with a 40 hp tractor.

Assuming your SM is running like it should (by the way that 40hp will actually pull more like 50hp due to the good weight distribution on that SM), you can pull 3-14" in most soils. However, look for a 2-16" Little Genius pull behind plow. Do not settle for one with "Plow Chief" bottoms, get one with Super Chief bottoms (latest edition of that plow). The Super Chiefs are still avail in most places, whereas the Plow Chiefs are really spendy// Good luck and enjoy your efforts. BobG in VA
