Yea, I got a breakover bar too. It was surprisingly strong getting those cutter nuts loose (I switched out my blades). I used an 8-foot 4 x 4 steel post as a cheater bar. I though for sure I was bending the breakover handle, but no, it actually turned the nut.

Attached is a picture of the set. It is some kind of "Made in China" brand but seems very well made. I needed a 1 5/16 socket for changing out my blades, and they wanted $15 for the socket and $20 for the breakover, so I bought the whole set for $80. I may find out that I coulda had it cheaper somewhere else, but I was in a squeeze, burning daylight, so I got it. Those big sockets are not available at Tractor Supply, Lowes, Home Depot, and most auto parts stores.

It has a ratchet, breakover, sockets sizes 7/8" to 2", and two extensions.

The "breakover" is not like I've seen before, maybe it has another name. Instead of the wobble joint, you turn the nut, the push the handle to the other end and turn another half turn.

I have disked about 4 acres 3 times in about 6 or 7 hours. How long would it take to till 4 acres, going slow enough that one pass would do the trick?

I think a tiller would beat the crap out of what the little disk will do, but the time I rented one it took about as long to do 4000 square feet as it took me to disk 4 acres.

Tell me I'm wrong and I'll be ordering one. I have just figured a tiller was for smaller jobs, like an acre or less.

You are wrong, you just need a bigger tiller and tractor /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif As for your disc, make sure the disc is in the air some when you try to tighten it. If it is in the ground and you have a lot of play the disc will shift and bind making it impossible to tighten. If they are in the air then you have a chance. You might have to put a pipe wrench on one end of the shaft to keep it from turning though (otherwise you will be there for a while /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif) Later.

Yeah, I'm not sure what they call those, but I think it'll be stronger than a breakover. Nice looking set.

I got the same socket set, same case at Menards for $39 a couple years ago. Good enough.

However, a disk needs some real power. A 3/4" air ratchet, or 2 big pipe wrenches with cheater bars.

Once the disk blades spread they get packed with dirt inside between the cones (spacers) and shaft, and you can't ever get them tight. Need to take all apart & clean up. Takes some work to pull apart too.

Letting it go as is will shear the axle off as the loose disk blade wobbles on it. Not good. I would not run it that way, the damage will mount up rapidly.

Bearings, on the other hand, with lots of grease will run for years & years even after being worn out - I said with lots & lots of grease tho. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Robert, I guess I need a bigger pipe wrench, Sounds like taking it apart is the way to go, if I can get it apart. In addition to dirt, since I was disking heavily vegitated soil there are weeds and grass wrapped up in it. That could be a factor.

Sure wish I could have saved the $40 on that socket set, but I felt fortunate to find that one in my rural area. I'm not surprised it could be had for $39, as it seems like I saw similar sets at Canton at the flea market one time, and of course I didn't think I had a particular use for it at the time. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

If the weather goes right this week (rain and then dry) I hope to break it up one more time and plant the seed. As usual, I'll have to work on the equipment first.

Sounds like a job for an impact wrench, but I really don't have a mean enough compressor for that right now. Its always something you need, on the farm........ /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Wrap a chain around your disks and frame to keep it from turning. Putting it in the dirt will keep the disc and spacers from chinching up.

I've got a 6' J-Bar with 20" pans that has a similar problem and it's always the left front gang. It bent the lock tabs and spun the nut off once and bent the axle. I got a new axle and it still has a problem. I used a nylock nut instead and it won't come off completely, but still gets loose. The hardened pans also wear into the axle and I 've had to tear it down and build (weld) axle back up twice in two years. Only this gang! What gives?

Hmm.. Left front gang on mine too. I hope mine is not that serious. I hope to take a look at it this weekend.
