What do you do with your used oil? When I change the oil in the cars I need to take it to the local Jiffy Lube or something. If I do that with the volume of oil to be changed when doing a 50hr maintenance I will be carting around a lot of oil to a lot of different places to get rid of it. That is if I can come up with enough containers to hold it all. What do you do?

sounds like you go through quite a bit of used oil. there is a garage furnace that burns used motor oil. that would get you some free heat in the colder months, and take care of your oil problem. i store my used oil in 55 gal drums, then take it to a truck garage for use in the used motor oil furnace they have.

I either use mine as an excellerant to burn brush piles, or take it to the local auto parts store.
One point, hydro fluid with water in it burns very poorly.

Our county solid waste transfer station takes hazardous wastes - up to 5 gallons per visit. The used oil you can leave in their bin anytime. Other stuff you have to take on certain days when they are there to accept it in person.

Using it for heat is a great idea - why give away the resource if you can use it yourself. Alas, I have no garage to heat.

Most shops around here LOVE the stuff since it is called "free heat".

You guys think NY state is going to let you have free heat? Get real /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I will ask around to see if some one will take it for that reason. The way the laws are in NY the hazardous waste disposal sites wont take oil since all the shops that change oil must take used oil. The caveate to that is they only have to take around a gallon at a time and only if their tanks are not full. So when I am looking at around 10 gal of used oil by the time I do the engine and trans it is going to take a little work to get rid of it. Well I will see if I can find some one that would like free heat.

My local wal mart has an oil pig for used oil - free - and I've dumped up to 15 gallons at a time. Just have to log it on their paperwork.

Mike, the prior owner of this place left his oil change container with used motor oil in it in the garage. He also left 3 partial gallon containers of antifreeze; one each of Prestone, Shell, and something else. I took it all to Walmart yesterday. The guy told me to dump the oil into a big tank with a label on it that said "used oil only". I did. Then he told me to dump the antifreeze into the same tank. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif And he didn't log anything or ask any questions.

oh-oh ... I betcha he just screwed up that load... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif course when it tests bad and they look at the log - nothing will be out of shape cause he didn't log it... I don't know about Wal Mart - but when an outfit called Safti-clean picks up our oil from the radar - (some cheap synthetic) they test it when it gets to wherever the collection point is...and if we put something in there that isn't suppose to be - they charge a fortune. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif We found it out once when the test came back bad and we had to pay - we since keep the used oil barrel locked up - I got a hunch one of our people put something in there from home.

That's what I thought, Mike. Maybe he's a disgruntled employee mad at the company or something. And it wasn't a kid; probably in his 40s. When he said to dump it in the same tank, I asked, "In the same tank?" and he said, "Yeah."
