Disposal of used oil

Do you have a car race track nearby? Many if not most tracks have recycling tanks and won't mind if you use them to recycle used oil.

Where ever you buy the oil from they have to take the used. However a lot of place will take it cause the have a waste oil furance. I know that my Bota dealer does. 2 years ago my Bota dealer had over 40 barrels on hand.

Up here in the northland anyone who sells motor oil must provide a place for your used oil.

I take mine to a local concrete plant where it is used as fuel.

Our town transfer station also takes waste oil. I transported it in the cat litter pails from Sams Club, the lids snap on fairly tight.

This must be something unique to Nova Scotia or the Maritimes, no such thing in Ontario.

As far as containers, I pretty much always use old oil containers. The buckets that your new oil came in will be big enough for the old. A funnel is all you need to put it back from the big ol' drain pan. Then take it where you bought the new oil for recycle. I actually bring the used oil to our local transfer station where they have 2 of the 750 gallon or so tanks for dumping used oil. They don't log anything, just point at it and let me dump whatever I've got. I don't exactly tell them how much I have but they don't ask either. Then keep the old 5 gallon buckets for the auto changes since they take a while to fill up and keep the time between recycle trips pretty long.

In fact, I have 10 gallons of used UTF outside right now awaiting recycle. I am waiting to add the 1.2 gallons of front axle fluid before making the trip.

Cheers

My local recycling/convenience/trash place uses a common tank for the oil and antifreeze. I think Safety Kleen separates it.

In the NW USA, the place you buy oil is also the place you recycle the used stuff.

Waste oil heaters are one good use for it, but many up here have another use for small quantities (1 gallon or so). Used engine oil is an excellent chainsaw bar and chain lubricant (no need to buy new). It even comes in the right viscosity grades in the right seasons, 10w40 (or 20w50) in summer and 10w30 (or 5w30) in winter.

Some years back, I made my living with a chainsaw and used either used engine oil or the 'remanufactured' stuff. I liked the straight 30 weight 'remanufactured' oil during the hottest weather because the paraffin in it really makes it stick to the bar and chain. Both are good, cheap, never caused a problem and solved the problem of what to do with the used oil from my pickup.

Wow, I thought bar oil was more like 90 weight. It sure pours slow and is much stringier than engine oil.
