Disposal of used oil

( It depends on why you are spreading oil. As a part of road construction or maintenance, then it is fine. In my current job we hire a county chip seal crew to resurface a portion of our roads every year. Chip seal is where they squirt out a liquid petroleum (oil) and then spread chip (1/2 minus or so) rock on it. Those kinds of rules are written for dumping hazardous waste in an unofficial manner.
//

And Dust control is one of those unapproved manners.

Never have figured out why if I pour a quart of oil on the ground it's pollution but when the county spreads oil on the gravel roads it's not.

How does approving or making it official cause the oil to be non polluting ? ? ?

There you go again...asking to many questions and trying to make sense out of the rules. You need to stick to the issues and not muddy up the water with facts. MIB will be showing up at your door if you keep it up. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Homeowners using it for dust control is likely not very legal.

There have been some neat new products for dust control on dirt and gravel roads made using non-petroleum products.

Just think of it as recycling the oil to where it came from, the dirt. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I don't spread, dump, or do anything else but recycle used oil but it is foolish to not realize that petroleum on the ground is a currently approved method of construction and maintenance for roads. The petroleum can take many forms and most are much less likely to pollute than engine oil.

I Just put in the fuel tank at the rate of 3 qts per tank (35 gal)the cummins doesn't mind it at all.

I'm sorry if anyone took my last post to mean that I think they are foolish. I hate when you reread something after a few days and it reads differently than you meant it.

Cheers

huh? Are you putting your used oil in your fuel tank? I just drained my engine (cummins b 5.9L) and will re-fill in the AM with new synthetic oil. Should I filter the used oil and re-use it as fuel?

I kinda don't think so, sounds like a good way to foul fuel filters and create some sludge in the fuel lines. And, what about the injection pump, I bet it likes fouled oil too?

How many miles have you been doing this?!?

I've always done this. I also change my FUEL filter every 10k... to dirty for the fuel system? I don't think so. My trucks are dodge with the 5.9 cummins. try 1 qrt at a time if your concernd..My 94 has just turned 335k and my 98 24v has 150k so I don't think I'm doing any damage...If you don't believe me go to turbodieselregister.com and do a search..

hi,
no,it's not that I don't believe you, it's that I don't believe it's good for the engine/fuel system. I'll goto that site and check it out, thanks.

now, off topic, can you recommend a good strait back exhaust for the 2500 cummins ? Thanks runningbird.

sure, are you trying to eleminate the muffler. if so I can help. I've done this to both my trucks..very little extra noise due to the turbo. doesn't help with the mileage like some might think but it does help with the EGT's. let me know what exactly you want to do and I'll give you some advice...I don't have much experience(none) with tractors but I do have quiet a bit with the cummins as related to dodge trucks.
