Disposal of used oil

Diesel engines are amazingly flexible in fuel that they consume. Engine oil would certainly make power but I too worry about the side effects of the various contaminants being abrasive or causing sludge mainly in the fuel pump and injector.

They say they filter it before using it.
What they don't mention is how affective or ineffective is the filtering?

I just don't see how poring used dirty oil contaminated with solids and various chemicals through a funnel with a screen on is going to clean it up.
It may remove some of the larger bits of solids but the small pieces slip right on through along with all the chemicals.

those solids should already be filtered and in your used oil filter.....whats left will be filtered by your fuel filter which you change on a regular basis.
I'm not trying to argue, the question was what do you do with your used oil, this is what I do and have been doing it for 10 years with no problems. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Whoops, sump oil is way different than oil just after the filter. The engine oil filter is very good but the oil leaves the filter and then goes through the engine. The really heavy junk sinks to the bottom of the oil pan to be removed with the change. Your fuel filter will catch most of this before heading to the diesel injection pump but what about the acids and dissolved metals? I suppose a gallon of used oil per fuel tenk does provide a lot of dilution and as we all know "dilution is the solution to the pollution".

But it's still not worth a potential risk to me just to save 75 cents per quart on diesel fuel.

In Illinois the AutoZone auto parts store will take the used oil for free. I don't know about other states. I searched for used oil disposal and found a site that listed places to get rid of used oil. Just entered my zip code.

Interesting note.
I'm in CA and was wondering if a furnace like that is available for purchase out here? (Tulare County) Where would you look online for one?
Anybody know?
