Disposing of used hydraulic oil

It's not just Oregon, here in Klickitat County,WA, the transfer station and landfills no longer take oil, because someone dumped some PCB's in the tank. Cost them upwards of $150,000. This just happened within the last 6 months. From what I understand, the problem is not limited to just this area either, apparently it is happening over a lot of the Pacific NW. I learned about it from the owner of the local oil change shop. He said it was likely going to affect his prices as he might have to start paying for disposal.

My town land fill, 15 miles from my house, will take all the waste oil I have for them. There is a small garage about 2 miles from my house, I found out they have a used oil burner to heat their shop. I now take my waste oil to the small garage and now they balance my tires and fix flats for free. :)

Heat with oil? Just dump it in the tank. Works fine and saves money too.

I wish I had a waste oil heater for my garage, but they are really expensive (at least to me) for a homeowners garage an finding one used is like unheard of.

After some of the post here...I checked that out to. And it's out of my league, and need.

In the old days it worked good for keeping the dust down on the roads.....a no no now?

I buy my Deere oils in plastic jugs about 2 1/2 gallon size then use the old hydraulic oil for bar and chain oil. Usually I pass a few jugs to the local tree cutters too.

I was wondering how hydraulic oil would work as chainsaw bar lube. I was worried that it wouldn't be sticky enough, but your experience has been good??

That sounds just like some idiot yo-yo...

I took 5 gallons of used motor oil and 2 gallons of used cooking oil in the other day. I had it totally emptied into their tank and this counter guy comes back in a panic - "We can't take cooking oil!!!"

hmmm - You mean they can take used motor oil with all kinds of metal particles, sludge, dirt, you-name-it, and they can't take nice clean cooking oil? I told them - no problem, it burns well on my burn pile.

I put in a can of Motor Honey or STP in a gallon of used motor oil or hydraulic oil. It really helps keep the oil on the bar because it makes the oil cling.

Neighbor growing up used to get used hydraulic fluid from work and run it for bar oil. Never heard of him having any problems.
Our Kubota dealer has a used oil heater for his shop and they will take as much as we want to send.

A buddy of mine runs it mixed with various other oils (including used motor oi) in his 96 Dodge dually with a 12 valve Cummins Diesel Engine. He bought that truck from me with 320k miles on it. He now has over 450k on it running waste oil.

I replaced the 96 Dodge with a 06. No way would I run wast oil in that 06 engine.

One of the reasons I prefer the hydraulic oil opposed to motor oil is that it is much cleaner in appearance. At least I don't have to buy chain lube My chains and bars seem to last a long time so I don't see any problems with using hydraulic oil so far.

Some of those cummins can run for many miles. Even better if they run on free fuel.

Look for someone with an old dump truck or end of life backhoe currently filled with 'soupy milk' and give it to them then they can mess with getting rid of what they are currently running. My F700 flat bed dump hydraulic tank holes 25 gallons and would gladly get rid of the crud in it if I had some relative clear UTF. :)

Buddy put a 5 gal jug in the back of his truck and after a bumpy ride, it was empty when he got to the recycle station. oops.

Yet another way of getting rid of it. How many could there be?

How about the innumerable rags he used to wipe out the bed and back of his truck ?

This is also the same guy that decided to drag race a young kid in an import car with "fart can muffler" on the way back from filling up TWO 5 gal jugs of diesel. He said there was maybe a gallon left total in both jugs when he got home and remembered they were back there. Some people never learn!

Sounds like he needs to put lids on his jugs...
