my bet is that the "advanced" solar pannel generating effency that is currently acheivable in the lab will make it to main stream before they figure out the sunlight laser.

meaning you could use the sun to generate electricy to drive a standard laser.

Gee I hate to be a wet blanket here, but the amount of energy he had to use to cause this was staggering. From other discussions on the internet it is expected that this process, while groundbreaking, is probably about as efficient as using electrolysis to tear apart the molecules and free up oxygen and hydrogen.

But researching its potential will take time and money, he said. One immediate question is energy efficiency: The energy the RF generator uses vs. the energy output from burning hydrogen.

At least with electrolysis you can capture the gases and use them at a later time (although not much later since hydrogen tends to escape pretty much every container designed thus far because it is so darned tiny).
