ditch mowing

kind of my thoughts, just not sure if I was crazy. As far as the tree goes, the issue that I have I guess is who's tree is it really? It is in the ditch so it is the field owners, or the county's? Either way, I think they would both be happy that it was gone since I would bet that neither would cut it down for the wood- only to get rid of it, but you are right... I should probably ask first.

Yep. You should ask first. Maybe they'll be happy to let you have it and maybe they'll point a gun out the door and scream "Get off my land". You just never know until you ask.

My home is on an acreage; we are about 100 yards from the city street, and none of the street borders my property. I mow the ditch on the roadside nearest my house (the other side is really not mowable) about 75% of the time, although it borders the property of two of my neighbors; they mow it (more or less) the rest of the time. I have been doing this for 40 years; mainly because it makes the area look more kept; and when the county or city mow, they only get about a 6 foot swath. Another reason I mow it is because the city/county have been know to spray herbicide on areas that they cannot mow, and that is UGLY.

As for the tree, you best ask. Some farmers are very jealous of their land and property; if you ask, you will probably be given permission gladly; however, if you don't, I would bet you will incur the wrath of your neighbor simply because he feels violated. I heard this from a farmer MANY years ago, and I've never forgotten it: "If there's any tracks made on my land I want to be the one to make them!".

I noticed on my way out yesterday that my last neighbor at the end of the road had mowed both sides for a quarter mile out and almost a half mile on both sides of the main highway. That was a lot of mowing.

Around here many get permits to mow and bale highway right of ways. Not sure how the process works but hay is hay especially this year.

In my state every county sends out a directory showing every section of land and who owns what on that section. Not sure if this is done in other parts but it would make it easy for you. Otherwise you could go to the county courthouse and see the registar of deeds.
