I have three ponds, a large barn, a 26'x35' garage, the house, 2 decks, a spring house, and about 25 trees along with 2000' of roadside ditch that all are constantly needing weed whacked. Needless to say I often fall behind in my weed whacking. I am looking for something to help out around the ponds edges and the roadside ditch. I was thinking about a woods 6' mechanical ditchbank cutter but was hoping there migth be a better(read cheaper) alternative. Anybody have any good suggestions.

Pushmower will work. I have been looking at the hydraulic ditch bank mower from woods but have also started looking at boom mounted mowers. I have over 5000 feet of ditch and channel banks to keep mowed along with a couple ponds but like you don't want to spend too much on one implement. How much were you qouted for the mechanical mower?

I am going totally from memory here, I think it was $3600. Saw a used one on Machinery Link for $1500 and looked like it was in nice condition, however it was on the wrong side of the country. Do you have an idea what the inexpensive boom mowers cost? And are they mounted 3pth or frame mounted? I would likee something that is 3pth mounted as I use the 5300 for a lot of different tasks.

Don't know where any distributors are but I ran across this looking for the same solution as you. I really like the size. All US models I've looked at are really large. I'm still cutting my pondbanks with a DR Mower. Check this link: http://www.sanyokiki.co.jp/English/home4-2e.html

That looks neat, I would be interested in knowing a price on it and a dealer that carried them. I forgot to mention that I have about 10,000' of fence/tree line that I would like to be able to cut back once a year. I'm currently using the rotary cutter that sticks out about 6" past the tires for the task, But if I could find something that would keep me and the tractor further away from the brush that would even be better. It amazes me how rapidly the brush and new growth will infringe into an existing field.

With the hours that I am away from home for work, I don't get enough time tractoring time as it is, so I would prefer to find the right attachment rather than a walk behind unit that will keep me off the tractors even more.

Take a look at Micro Mower. They have spindle trimmers and boom mowers for compact tractors.

Docheb,

Those sure look cool, but I bet the price is /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif!

DocHeb,

Any idea what the price on them is? Looks exactly what I need, but I bet Fishman is right about the price. I like the idea of a flail mower for around the ponds rather than the woods rotary cutter. I think the quality of the cut would be slightly better, plus any invisible rock would probably be less likely to be subject to an uncontrolled launch.

I found a good deal on a JD 90 Boom flail mower, picked it up for $1000. I've checked with Micromower, theirs start at $6500, using tractor hydraulics, $9500 for a self contained PTO driven hydraulics.
