Ditchbanks and Ponds need Mowed

Yep, I've seen that, Dave. When we go to WV, we usually stop for the night somewhere from Lebanon to Cookville; always try to get east of Nashville at least the first day.

I posted this in another area but someone directed me to this old post. Did anyone end up buying a reach mower? I'd like to know how it went???
"I am looking at buying a reach mower for my 45 hp. tractor. Does anyone have any experience with these? I will be using around the ponds and on a ditch that is too steep to drive on as well as trimming a hedge. I have been quoted over the net $5500 for a brand new unit with 11' reach. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks "

The VMC units can reach over, out and down.
The RB110, with a reach of 10 ft from the center of the tractor to the outside of the flail head, can be operated on as small a tractor as a Deere 4100 ( with the opposite tire filled ).
Ideal for cleaning along side ponds, ditches, cutting of small branches etc. Mowes clean too.
You can likely talk them into demonstrating or to buy the unit on proof of good work. Their number 864-888-8400 I believe.

I am sure ALL your good freinds in the hobby farm world want to borrow this one !

Good luck !

1*About those road side ditches, I weed-wacked mine for 2 years, then got the idea to rework them, Checked with the local VDOT (Virginia) and they said they did not care if I reshaped them as long as the water did not pool in the road and if it washed out my drive, that it was my problem. So I proceeded to fill them in and reshaped them so that I could mow them with the tractor.
2*Looks better than the old ditch, there is nothing to tear a car up if they run off the road,
3*I can get to anywhere on my road right-of-way by just driving off the road where I want to be.

4*Best of all, no more weed-wacking along the road.

1*I did this for 110' on the lower side of my driveway.
2*True but there is now no barricade to keep them out of my front yard.
3*So can I but this can cause a traffic hazard. For 40 years people are used to my driveway and expect traffic in and out of it. What they don't expect is cars turning into and pulling out of the yard from just any old place. Be Careful doing that. It's easy as a motorist to identify gravel slag blacktop and concrete as a traffic area but no so easy to do the same with green grass.
4*I just got the grass planted on mine so haven't gotten to mow it yet.

Mr. Brown,
For the life of me, I can't understand why you dig up all of these old threads. Then you post on them like all of the members are still keeping up with the thread.

Added new information by stressing a point that was not covered in the original thread.

Rip Rap is large stone used for slowing the velocity of water and protecting the soil from erosion. If you have a ditch or channel that is eroding rip rap will stabilize it. It is not a surface that you would want to cut grass on. Creating large bowls made of rip rap at the end of ditches will prevent 60 -70 % of all sediments from being transported into a lake or pond. These bowls are called "Sediment Traps or Forebays" and they are used all the time. If anyone is unhappy with rip rap and would like a substitute lining for a storm water channel I would recomend a synthetic Erosion Control Blanket (EC-3) which is stapled to the bare soil and allows the grass to grow up through it. Properly installed it can perform the same function as rip rap.
I am employed in the environmental field, if anyone has a specific problem with erosion, ponds, lakes, etc, you can email me .

What sizes does this come in? Where can I get it?
