I went shopping for a Kubota zero turn, and the dealer also sells Dixie Choppers which seem to be built heavier, and the comparable model was also $550 cheaper, has anyone heard how the Dixie Chopper's hold up?

We have 6 Dixie's at work. They are used 30+ hours a week during cutting season... which is about 8-9 months a year in SE Texas. They hold up very well and are built solid. We have "Flatlanders." I'm not sure which model you are looking at, but, I would imagine any of them are good. Those guys put thousands of hours on them and trade them in on new ones every 5 or so years. Dixie Choppers are definately a quality commercial mower. I don't have any experience with the Zubota's.... but I can't imagine with that name on the side they aren't a top notch machine as well.

A Dixie was the last competitor I was considering when I bought my ZTR (bought an Exmark). I think they are very well built, but I had a couple of very small issues for my choice - one, the deck on the Exmark stood out alittle farther on the left, allowing me to mow right up against an object (like a tree) without dragging the tire. Second, the controls on the Exmark seemed more forgiving and easier to control, at least for a beginner. One thing the Dixie had that I'm going to copy is the fold down plate over the discharge shute - great idea that!

Last summer we bought a Dixie Chopper Silver Eagle for $5400 and a Kubota ZG23 for $7200 (for properties in 2 different states) The Kubota is faster, much smoother hydraulics, has a rollbar, hood to protect engine, nicer seat, hydraulic deck, is just as heavy duty as the DC and weighs more. The Kubota is everyone's favorite to use.
Both machines have Kohler gas engines.
The Dixie Chopper we bought is a great value for $5400. They are great machines. The one I have is a basic model but the higher end Dixie Choppers have all of the bells and whistles.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy either machine in the future. You really need to test drive both for a while and decide which one is best for you.

I know that Ferris ZT mowers have an optional front suspension. It seems like it added about a grand to the price when I was looking at them.
Simplicity also offers a front suspension.

I looked at just about every ZT offered a couple of months ago, but I just can't spend that much money right now.

Where did you feel like the Kubota feel short. I can't think of anything they could do to make it more heavy duty than it already is?

I guess just judging with my eye the steel on the Dixie makes it look heavier, today I checked out the Toro zero turns and I like them too, I guess I'll test them all before I buy.
