Last Sundays paper had a story about do it yourselfers being a dying breed. It seemed to be more advertising than factual. I wanted to get your opinion. In my area DIY is declining as people seem to have more money available, less free time and many other reasons. What do you think?

I'd speculate that another reason is that everything from appliances to cars are getting more complex and/or complicated, and more highly specialized knowledge and/or tools are needed for many jobs.

I know I have learned that it is cheaper in the long run (usually) for me to hire certain things done rather than do it myself. Wife, soon to be 3 kids, full time job, part time side business, caring for my 55 acres and Mom's 100 acres + cattle.... it seems to take up quite a bit of my free time. It is simpler for me to work a weekend of overtime or do an extra networking job then hire the plumber/carpenter/electrician w/ the extra $$$. The way I look at it, there is a reason he is in his business and there is a reason I am in my business. Heck, I rarely change my own oil anymore. (here come the resonses about lube shop horror stories /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif)
Thing is, I do not like the loss of self reliance in this country. Hows that for a contradiction? Convenience turns into a double edged sword.

I know I'm more of a do-it-yourself person now than I was 10-15 years ago.

I've quit that myself; just let the dealer do it. And another reason "my do it myself" is declining is that I'm gettin' older'n lazier. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
