DIY automatic Oiller, any one have idea's

I would like to build an automatic oiller to lubricate a chain,

I think a long time ago on some kind of old farm implement I saw, their was a small oil tank with some foam at the bottom, you would fill this tank, open a valve and the oil would drip on the chain

I was also told i could make one with a diesel injector, but that would include a battery and a switch. I would like to have it gravity drip, i just dont know how to contol the drips, other than a small valve opened up just a little, any other ides

Look on the milling forum at arboristsite. Lot's of members make chain oilers for their CSM's.

I have had farm equipment of recent manufacture that had automatic oilers on them. Can't recall exactly but think it was a round baler. It was just a small container that screwed into a hole and dripped oil onto the chain.

I looked at them at mcmaster.com. They just have a needle valve to control the drips. Looks like they have a sight window so you can see the drips too.

If it helps, A place I worked at once used a paint brush that the handle was plastic (the better brushes made better oilier's) The handle was cut off at the top of the brass crimp. A small pilot hole was drilled through. Size depending on oil output req'd. Then drilled and pipe tapped to accept oil line/cup. Hope it helps.

I have seen these oils for sale in an ag catalog but I can't remember where. I know they were priced honest and for sure not the $66 shown in attachment. Perhaps Shoup Mfg or Sloan Express. Try those.

Might also have been the Surplus Center.

Not much to them but easiest & most reliable quickest to unclog all use a small valve.

It also depends on how much oil you want out of them. some OLDER ones were little more than a Mason Jar with a good lid that has a hose connector, (SMALL HOSE) like air shock size tube (1/16"od) the mason jar turned upside down will form a vacuum & only let out a small amount until it sucks in some air then starts over. The tube can go down into a small oil well in back side of brush like mentioned above. when the brush has enough oil air can't get in and oil can't get out. when brush dries out some the air can get in and oil out wetting brush...

Go look at some old machinery. They use to be all over the place until sealed bearing came about. I have one made out of brass and they are neat. How big of one do you need? If you want I can take a picture of it and you can see what to look for. I think the 1st one I seen was on a old steam piston driven generator.

Use a bulkhead fitting to convert any container you want. You can look for the motor oil that comes in a clear quart bottle and use that. The instant push-on fittings and 1/4" OD polyethylene tubing should work. Use 2 valves in series - a needle valve to meter flow and a ball valve to shut it off. That way you don't have to adjust the flow every time.
