The "modern equipment" illustration in the above link is the type of box I am familiar with....it is nothing but a sheet of plywood and some 2x4's...
You can make sticks using either wood or small diameter metal conduit etc...pucks are made using a hole cutter and whatever material that makes a good puck (hardwood, plastic etc., etc...)
In the configuration cited it is possible to place the puck in the end hole (goal) and ricochet it all the way through the interior holes and out the opposite end goal (hole)...waxing the bottom of the box helps...
There are two basic types of play..fast and slow...a slow game is like billiards...each player takes alternating shots...and a fast play game where both participants continually go after the puck to score...

I got rid of sand box . The kids liked it but neighbors cat liked it more

Round hay bales- if you are in cattle country, you could offer to store them for a neighbor on your property- As 10+ year olds, my brother and I loved playing on top of dad's round hay bales (running and jumping from bale to bale and row to row). You could also make a maze and rearrange them from time to time.
