DIY logging winch build

I'm wondering if you a bit skimpy on the brake pads. There just isn't enough area to do the job. Also if the pads were in a bigger circle I think they would be more effective. Just my thoughts.

Truck air systems are under 175psi, while the Wallenstein hydraulic remote system uses 800psi on a 2" cylinder (to retract the rod to engage, so the weak side - but still).

That are hydraulic cylinders for trailer brakes running on the tractors hydraulic system, don't you use this type of brakes in the us?

Yeah, I went back to the clutch disc. I'm hoping it works better now. There are commercial made units that only have 4 pads though. My thought on keeping them in close was to keep the drum end from flexing as much (I'm not 100% sure if it is or isn't) Thanks

I guess one lesson learned is you don't save a lot of money by using what you have in some instances. In my case the 1" chrome shaft, I should have spent a few more dollars and gotten a larger diameter shaft. Try not to laugh but I'm already compiling a list of parts for the next one! :thumbsup:

With the tractor not running you should be able to feel any flex by holding you hand on the drum end and applying and releasing the clutch. The cable should be mostly spooled out and you should spread your hand out over as much an area of the drum as possible. It's interesting what you can feel but not see.

It's difficult because one, I am alone and two it wants to rotate as you apply the force.

Well I have what I consider to be great news! The winch worked like a champ today! I didn't even give it an option I hitched two logs on it I would guess at 12-14" by about 20' long and it hauled them right in! I did have to make one minor adjustment on the bolts that adjust the tension on the ramps. I worked it pretty hard this morning and I am very pleased at this point. I call it a win :drink:

My spool shaft is 1-3/8". I say go for it, if you build another winch you could sell it and get your money back.

Well I have used the winch a couple of times since the other day and it's still performing awesome!
Here's a short video I took today, it's very difficult to hold the camera and still get the job done but you get the idea.
