DIY Mobile Home Move

I had an opportunity to buy a pole 28x40 pole building. Was going to move it 3 miles on a State Hiway. I contacted the power company regarding overhead lines and they confirmed all were high enough. I contacted the local StTe Highway Patrol zone office. Was told if I pull it with a tractor I don't need to do anything. I then visited with the local State Trooper Sergeant. He confirmed that. I intended to do it early Sunday morning. Also intended to have two escort vehicles with flashers on. Deal fell thru.

Wat? Were you going to cut the poles off at the ground? Did you seriously think that the wall girts/purlins were going to be strong enough to hold the building together during transport?

You are lucky that deal fell through, that would have been a disaster. A framed building can be moved with sufficient extra bracing; a pole building needs disassembly/reassembly. Just my intuitive opinion. Plus, 28' wide.... c'mon.

I started to post this in the hauling wrong of the trailer forum
but this guy was kickin butt. I got behind him on the way to church
and he negotiated one 90 degree turn and the rest of the road with ease.
Considering he was pulling it with an F-250.
He had a car in front flagging and one behind.
I shot into our church parking lot and only had time for this pic.

I have a dually and was wondering about the hitch weight. I could picture the back three feet of truck laying on the ground/

Yeah, that's why there is BlondeStar. But I'm confused why Illinois doesn't allow car pooling?

Wat??? You've obviously not saw a pole building moved intact. If it'll fit down the roadway it's the only logical way to go.

Point being that in even in a rural community, not everyone uses logic and common sense, thus the reason why laws are created. People do stupid stuff and people get hurt, and laws are created to protect us. Don't always agree with it, but generally that's one of the ways it works.

Not certain how else I can put it so you can understand this.

I also would love to live in your community where everyone uses logic (and has common sense)

I agree with you whole heartily with all that you said. The problem that bothers me is why if the law is so needed for the public good does it not apply to all?

Farmers are exempt from a lot of commercial rules.
Fire depts. are exempt from dot licensing. This would explain why our county dept is constantly wrecking the fire truck.

If I don't have proper lighting and reflective markings on my GN trailer it's illegal.

Farmers here pull hay trailers with a 10ft wide load stacked so high you can't see the operator from the rear, no lights, markings, or license plate.

Because the law is not out to look after you, the law is out to enforce the state and federal law.

Well, yeah. I've never seen a pole building moved down the road, only framed buildings. And you didn't describe any bracing, so I was left to imagine.

Considering that you can build a new pole barn for ~$10k, I can't really understand why you'd want to spend a bunch of time, effort and money to brace one up, and remove the entire foundation system inherent in the buildings design. It just seems you'd wind up with, well, a real piece of **** on the other end of the move.

Finally found a picture I been looking for. A friend told me I could have this building if I moved it. Had the Case 1845C at the time and a half ton pickup. I figured I’d go run the forks under it and load it. Wrong. Had to strap the building to the machine and drag it on backwards. It was fun getting off the trailer. You can see the straps in the photo, one goes over the top and one goes all the way around, both are hooked to the fork frame. Luckily I only had to go a few miles, it was on a Saturday morning.

A 30x40 sold a few miles from me for $500 to be moved. I doubt the buyer had $9,500 invested in the move.

Lastly, if one has the ability to move such a building it would be a given the end result would be considerably better than a piece of ****.

Lol, sorry our conversation is going so poorly here. What I don't understand, and you haven't yet answered: Do you have to cut the poles off, and then upon positioning in the new location, how do you support the building properly?

Yeah. A pole barn is nothing without its feet in the ground. Lat fall I supplied steel channel braces/anchors for a pole barn where many of the posts had rotted off and a concrete floor was being poured. A total waste of time and money in my opinion.

You didn't ask that. You immediately started condemning the process.

Precisely measure the existing pole locations. Cut them off at ground level. At the new site dig holes larger than the poles using the measurements as a guide. Move the building onto the new site. Fasten new poles to the sides of e,isting poles in the new holes. Set the building. When done properly it's just as strong as original.

Again, if you didn't understand the process, all you had to do was ask.
