DK40 versus DK$%

Guidester, all the HP or torque in the world won't do you any better for draft loads on the DX35 - DX45. The hydro transmission is set to 5000 psi relief on all these models. The DX45 can pull no more than the DX35. It's like a 12 yr-old boy or a weight-lifter fishing with 6 lb test line. It doesn't matter how much you can pull when you exceed the limit.

The real gains of the higher HP tractors are in hydraulic and PTO power. If you don't need those and want a hydro tranny, go with the DX35. If you want to use all the HP for draft loads, you'll have to get the gear tractor. That's just the way it is because of that fixed 5000 psi relief valve on the hydro tranny. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Do you know if any other manufacturers follow that same principle?

No, I don't JayC. I only have specific knowledge of the CNH Class III tractors. I don't even know if the Class IIs use a similar fixed relief valve, but from the descriptions of a lot of owners, my guess would be that it works the same.

On my tractor, I consider the two high ranges for mowing and travelling on the road. My two lower ranges are for dirt work. Often, I find myself in low-turtle and still stall the transmission because of downpressure on the wheels from the loader. To me this is a plus because if the transmission doesn't stall, the engine does. I'd rather not have to restart the engine a lot or lug it down.

Sorry for the late reply, work has kept me away for a bit. I completely agree with you on the hydrostatic models. This is precisely why I believe I will go with the "D" gear drive model tractor. Then if the clutch will hold it, it will put it to the ground...

In addition to the other benefits I think are associated with a 4 banger, extra bearings in the engine will not hurt either to help buffer the hammering....
